Additional Information

The threat of dictatorship has become a widespread fear in several countries. But how do dictatorships work, and more importantly, how can one survive in a dictatorship?

Unfortunately, Hungarian history is rich in such experiences. On our historical walk, we will discuss five different periods of Hungarian history in the past 200 years when the population had to endure some form of dictatorial regime.

We’ll visit venues associated with each dictatorial regime and, finally, sit down for a beverage in a goulash Communism-style café (OPTIONAL!) where we can delve into major themes connected to the practice of dictatorships:

 • definition of dictatorship
 • foreign occupation and local dictatorship
 • collaborators in maintaining the regime
 • personal cult of dictators
 • propaganda and the language of dictatorships
 • victims of dictatorships
 • censorship
 • strategies of survival
 • passive and forms of resistance
 • personal stories
 • emigrants
 • peaceful or violent end of dictatorships

Great experience! - Miklós gave a very fun and motivating introduction to the language. Hungarian can be very daunting to approach but Miklós made it interesting and picked my curiosity to learn more about it! I ended up wishing I had booked the longer session. I look forward to continuing learning the language and the history of my ancestors. I will for sure keep an eye on Fungarian activities next time I visit Budapest!

Excellent way to enhance a trip to Budapest! - We met Miklós on our first full day in Budapest for a brilliant one - hour Hungarian lesson. Miklós is an extremely friendly, knowledgeable man, and brilliant teacher who entertained us, as well as imparted his knowledge for a super 60 minute lesson. He provided a notepad and pen and happily answered any questions we had along the way. Following our lesson, our trip to Budapest was certainly enhanced by being able to say ‘hello’, ‘thank you’ and ‘goodbye’ to the local people of Budapest (amongst many other words). We were also able to subsequently recognise many other words from menus and signs during our stay which was highly rewarding indeed, and enabled us to experience the Hungarian language, and therefore culture, far more than we would otherwise have been able to do. I wish we had booked 3 hours!

Much fun with the fungarian language class - The language class was very cool. The teacher Barna made the language exciting to learn and with some little pieces of the history of Hungary he also made it interesting. Now we can proudly order two beer in Hungarian ;-) The atmosphere of the café was very pleasing and the Hungarian snack was very welcomed. In general, the staff such as our teacher Barna or the organizer Miklós were very friendly and helpful. All in all an amazing language class. 10/10 would do it again

Great and fun Hungarian course - Miklós is a skilled and friendly teacher that will learn you basic and practical Hungarian. I would highly recommend this course if you're looking for a short introduction to the Hungarian language and its pronunciations.

My Mum and I thoroughly enjoyed... -
My Mum and I thoroughly enjoyed this. Ernese was extremely informative and patient. Although we only booked an hour session, our session lasted closer to 2 hours. Its was great to have an opportunity to ask all our questions about Budapest and the way of life.
Thank you :-!
