Highlights
  • Szemlo-Hegyi Barlang (Showcave) - Cave Walk is a relaxed way of cave-exploring even for those who suffer from claustrophobia. Budapest is the capital of caves: more than two hundred caves are known under the Buda side of the town, created by the same springs that supply the famous spas. Szemlo-hegyi Cave is the ”underground flower garden” of Budapest because of its floriform mineral concretions: cave corals, calcite plates and gypsum crystals. Spectacular chambers, vast vertical dimensions and fancy „petrified ornaments” characterize this cave. After the first part of our tour, from the top of this cave we can have a break to admire the panorama of the capital.

  • Palvolgyi Caves - Palvolgyi Cave system is the longest cave system of Hungary. This is a labyrinth of narrow passages and hollow spaces. You will need to be ready to climb some stairs: we will climb more than 400 stairs and a 7 meter long ladder. Besides stalactites and stalagmites, the cave has calcite and barite crystals and calcite plate deposits originating from former hot-water lakes.

Additional Information

Cave Stroll – A journey perfect for those who are less adventurous or have claustrophobia, and no restrictions regarding age. This 2.5-3 hr private exploration takes you into two artificially lit, paved caves. The first resembles an ‘underground garden’ set in Budapest due to its unique mineral formations, including cave corals, calcite plates, and gypsum crystals. The second cave hosts calcite and barite crystals, and layers of calcite from ancient hot-water lakes. You can also observe stalactites and stalagmites here.

Please note: this is an exclusive, English-speaking tour designed for small groups. However, for a reduced fee, you can join the regularly scheduled Hungarian guided tours (frequented by school classes or families), which commence every hour.

  • Ages younger than 6 and older than 75 are not permitted.

Nice cave tour!!@ - We took the tour of Szemlő-hegyi-cave and Palvolgyi cave. There was a 15 minute 3D movie about all of the caves under Budapest. Victor was our guide and he provided great information about the history and geology of the caves with a good bit of humor too! There are concrete paths through a lot of the tour with some steep and uneven steps and a ladder in the mix, so consider your physical condition for this tour. There aren't a lot of spectacular cave formations due to the way the caves were formed but enough diversity of deposits and geology to keep things interesting. If you Google Map to Pusztaszeri ut 37 it will place you in front of a driveway........just go a few meters north and you will find the cave. Well worth your time while in Budapest. Recommended!!

Underground city caves - The tour was informative, our guide Peter had some good stories to share. The location was easy to get to walking or on a bus. There are 2 caves, exiting the first cave there was a great view of the city. We walked about 10 minutes to the next caves which is near a little restaurant.
