Coptic Cairo and the Citadel - Ahmed Kamel was a great guide and took us around the Citadel and Coptic Cairo at our own pace and made the day very enjoyable. We even got a drop-off at the airport which made making the most of our last day in Cairo easy and enjoyable!

Highly Recommend! - My guide was Mahmoud Emam, and my driver was Ahmed Shahaat. They were both very kind. Mahmoud was a great guide—with me every step of the way, very knowledgable on modern as well as ancient Egyptian history, a good communicator, and willing to talk about anything. We visited The Citadel, a medieval fort where the “White Mosque” is located; it was a beautiful building. We also went to a building where a Coptic Oriental Orthodox church meets. The building where the church gathers is known as “The Hanging Church” because its architectural design tricks the eye, suggesting that it has no foundation and is, thus, suspended in the air. The building where the Coptic Oriental Orthodox church meets is filled with things like relics and artwork of people who are considered important to ethnic Copts. Egypt has a very sorrowful Christian history filled with schisms and martyrdom that dates even before the Council of Chalcedon. Nevertheless, I’m so glad I was able to experience a bit of the Coptic history—shaped by the monasticism of people like Shenoute and other desert fathers as well as other foundational Christian leaders like Athanasius. I noticed that the church that meets at “The Hanging Church” reveres the gospel writer, Mark, who likely spent a lot of time in Egypt after the death and resurrection of Jesus. It was a fascinating site to see for someone like me, so foreign to the intricacies of Coptic culture, and I’m grateful that Mahmoud gave me space to experience it all at my own pace. Mahmoud and I spent much of our time in the car talking about ancient Egypt which must be an area of specialization for him. He was a wealth of information on ancient Egypt. After the tour, Mahmoud asked if I wanted to learn more about papyrus with a stop at a government-approved shop. Papyrus is an incredibly important part of Christian history, in large part due to Egyptian discoveries like the Chester Beatty and Oxyrhynchus papyri. So while I’m normally VERY leery of these kinds of stops on tours, I did actually want to learn a lot more about papyrus. It wasn’t a very pushy sales presentation, and I was very grateful to learn more about how papyrus is made. The salesperson at the shop was, of course, still a salesperson. But I was happy to buy a few small mementos. Be sure to check out their “magic room” for a neat glow-in-the-dark trick on the papyri. This tour is a great way to spend a few hours seeing an important part of Cairo. I highly recommend Mahmoud and Ahmed!
