Highlights
  • Cairo Citadel - The Citadel of Cairo, also known as the Citadel of Saladin (Arabic: قلعة صلاح الدين‎ Qalaʿat Salāḥ ad-Dīn), is a medieval Islamic fortification in Cairo, Egypt. It was constructed by Salah ad-Din (Saladin) and expanded by later Egyptian rulers. Serving as the seat of government and the residence of Egypt’s rulers for nearly 700 years, from the 13th to the 19th centuries, it occupies a strategic location on a promontory of the Mokattam hills, overlooking Cairo and dominating its skyline. At the time of its construction, it was one of the most impressive and ambitious military fortifications of its era. Today, it is a preserved historic site featuring mosques and museums. The initial construction began under Saladin in 1176, with significant developments during the Mamluk Sultanate, particularly under Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad in the 14th century. In the early 19th century, Muhammad Ali Pasha demolished many older structures and built new palaces and monuments, shaping much of the Citadel’s current form. In the 20th century, it served as a military garrison for the British and later the Egyptian army until it was opened to the public in 1983. In 1976, UNESCO declared it part of the World Heritage Site Historic Cairo (Islamic Cairo), which was the new center of the Islamic world, reaching its golden age in the 14th century.

  • The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities - Commonly known as the Egyptian Museum or Museum of Cairo, the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo, Egypt, houses a vast collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts. With 120,000 items, a significant portion is on display while the rest are stored. Built in 1901 by the Italian construction company Garozzo-Zaffarani and designed by French architect Marcel Dourgnon, it is one of the largest museums in the region. As of March 2019, the museum remains open to the public. In 2020, it is set to be replaced by the new Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza.

  • Khan Al-Khalili - Khan el-Khalili (Arabic: خان الخليلي‎) is a renowned bazaar and souq located in Cairo’s historic center. It is a major attraction for both tourists and locals, and is home to many Egyptian artisans and workshops producing traditional crafts and souvenirs.

  • Mosque of Muhammad Ali - One of Cairo’s most beautiful mosques, it is situated within the Citadel of Cairo.
