The canyon’s maroon-striped walls expose layers of history dating back to the Cretaceous period, around 70 million years ago, when dinosaurs inhabited a lush, subtropical environment. The next major stop for most visitors is the [Royal Tyrrell Museum], which brings the abundant fossils of the badlands to life. Spotting the world’s largest dinosaur means you’re in the right place. Additional attractions can be found along the Hoodoo Trail (Highway 10). Itinerary: Calgary/Banff – Horseshoe Canyon (60 mins) – Royal Tyrrell Museum (120 mins) – Hoodoo Trail (30 mins) – Calgary.

Pros and cons , maybe a little unlucky - It was unfortunate for us that our group consisted of 10 Chinese ladies and us 2 English speaking tourists. The guide was also Chinese. We had no warning when booking that it was a bilingual tour and as such it felt like most of the tour was in Chinese! Particularly as the ladies had many questions. My tip would be to check this out beforehand. The first stop at Horseshoe Gorge was stunning introduction to the area. Cool in the morning, so wrap up and only use the loos if really desperate! The stop at Royal Tyrell Museum for 2 hours in a dramatic landscape was good. My tip would be to take a picnic and enjoy a hike instead of paying to enter museum and the sub standard cafeteria. Unless of course you have a very keen interest in dinosaurs in which case it is a great museum. The stop at the Hoodoos was very good and an immense area of dramatic beauty. The day was not overly long - 8.30am to 4pm with a fair amount of time in the tour bus; with wonderful views and such vast landscapes to enjoy. Overall, not the best value tour we’ve done in Canada and maybe worth exploring alternatives if available

Dinosaur tour - Drumheller, the Badlands and the hot-dogs are à must. The museum is definitly to be seen. The only thing mission would have been for our driver and guide to have given us more information. Maybe it would be more interesting for all concerned to offer tours entirely in Chinese and tours entirely in English. To mix the two is not easy for all parties involved.
