Highlights
  • Phnom Kulen National Park - At 8:00 AM, we depart for Kulen National Park, the lost city of the Khmer Empire, established by Jayavarman II in the 9th century for the god Shiva. It was here that the king first declared independence from Java and conducted the King God ceremony. According to Lidar scanning reports, it was the largest ancient city in the world. The park contains over 30 temples hidden in the jungle and beneath the earth. We will spend 30 minutes visiting the thousand Lingas of Shiva on the riverbed, which flows to a waterfall with varying heights where we can swim to cleanse ourselves of deep sins. The sacred pond changes colors with the seasons, and we will also see a large reclining Buddha carved from natural stone in the 16th century. Additionally, we will explore more monuments and trek 300 meters through a local village. Next, we will return to the beautiful natural waterfall for an hour of swimming. Afterward, we will relax and have lunch for an hour on our way to Beng Mealea, an ancient complex from the 12th century built by King Suryavarman II as a prototype for Angkor Wat. The site features carvings on lintels and frontages but is heavily damaged and covered by the forest, with bright green leaves and moist stones providing scenic photo opportunities. Finally, we will return to the hotel.
