Highlights
  • Schooner Appledore II Windjammer Cruise - If you always wanted to sail your own wooden ship, this is your chance. The crew welcomes your participation - offer to help raise the sails and take a turn at the wheel. The Appledore II is a hard working, seaworthy schooner. She has sailed around the world, docking at many harbors along the way. Twice a year, she still sails the Eastern seaboard between her two home ports of Camden, Maine and Key West, Florida. Ask your crew about her history, some have made this bi-annual 2,000 mile sailing trip.

Our day sail on the Appledore II schooner departs from Bayview Landing, taking you out of Camden Harbor. Camden is often called the “jewel of the Maine coast” which becomes clear as you sail past the impressive lighthouse, Curtis Island Light, dating from 1836 and into Penobscot Bay. Considered to be one of the top cruising bays in the world, Penobscot Bay will amaze you with its uninhabited islands, wildlife and views of Camden Hills and other coastal mountains dropping off into the sea.

During your Camden boat tour, look along the shore for Mount Battie, historic inns, and elegant summer mansions of the rich and famous with their million dollar yachts. Watch lobstermen hauling in their traps. On a typical day, you may see porpoises playing in the water, ospreys and eagles hunting for fish and even the occasional whale. Watch for seals sunning themselves on rocks and cute guillernots, cousins to puffins, with their bright red feet, wobbling as they walk along the rocky shoreline.

Quench your thirst with cocktails, beer, wine and soft drinks, all available for purchase during your sailing cruise.

As Camden Harbor comes back into view, relax and feel the wind sweep through your hair as your memorable sailing ship cruise draws to a close.

Wonderful experience! - I enjoyed the peaceful lapping of the waves against the boat. The captain and crew were most entertaining and knowledgeable with the area and The boat. Would definitely recommend this for others and their families.

Do not miss this opportunity! - The captain and crew were very friendly and accommodating. Although the wind was light, the Captain took us down the coast allowing us to take pictures of various islands and lighthouses and even a pile of rocks that has caused several shipwrecks offshore of dead man’s cove. There are stories to be heard and so much to see. Had fall colors arrived normally, we would have had an opportunity for some fantastic pictures.

Perfect day sail - I went sailing with 3 different sailing companies while in Camden, Maine, and this was by far my favorite! Mid afternoon sun was just enough to keep the chill off. The vessel is large enough to be able to walk around…. And they had a bar for drinks! Highly recommend!

We love the Schooner Appledore cruises - A bit foggy, but fabulous wind and one great ride on the Appledore yesterday afternoon. Think this was our fifth time sailing with them. Great boat, great crew and wonderful sail out of Camden Harbor.

It was ok - Although the staff were friendly, some narration by the captain would have been appreciated. We were expecting to sail closer to the shore but we went out to the middle of the bay and back.

Just OK - Took the 2 hour sail on the Appledore Schooner midday departing at 3pm. Sadly the boat was more crowded than I expected and told to “squeeze in to make room for your neighbor”. Once on board, the crew were busy taking drink orders (liquor, beer, wine) and then getting those drinks passed around as we set sail. Captain Russ is a very quiet man and while I understand he has a lot of responsibilities, I’m sure he has a lot of information about the boat and the area we were sailing. Instead we sailed around the waters with no information on the history of these waters or it’s surrounding area. Our sail was 2 hours from 3-5pm. At 4:00 pm the two deckhands (Zack and Heather) were standing behind me. I overheard Heather say to Zack how the time was slowly creeping by. He encouraged her to go talk to people to make the time go by fast. This is what the cruise truly lacked. Instead of connecting with others on the boat and telling us about the area or history of the boat, they were more focused on selling drinks. At the end of the cruise the captain gives us a quick 3 min spill on how the boat was 50 years old sailing over a million miles as working fishing boat. Personally, I think it would have been nice to hear more about this earlier in the cruise. Overall, I found the cruise to be just okay. In the future I will look for a boat that takes less number of people without a focus on selling alcohol, and instead a more serious focus on sharing the history of the islands, the boat, and majestic scenery that people travel to see.
