  • Chichen Itza - Enjoy the tranquility of your early-morning visit before the crowds arrive.

Learn how this large pre-Colombian city played an important role in Mayan civilization from around A.D. 600 to 1200, and remained a center of worship and pilgrimage until the arrival of the Spanish. Even today, it is still considered a sacred site by the Yucatán peninsula’s Maya population.

Like many of ancient Mexico’s cities, the site was abandoned, and its ruins were hidden by jungle. Hear how the site was discovered and unearthed by archaeologists, gaining UNESCO protection and considered today one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Your guide will explain the philosophy, cosmology and mythology behind this ancient site, such as the meaning of the stone carvings, pyramids, platforms, ball courts and staircases.

Visit the Temple of the Warriors, The Ball Game and of course the famous El Castillo, also known as the Temple of Kukulkan.

Get over the 5am pick up time—EARLY ACCESS IS THE KEY. - Ok, so let's get it out of the way—5am pick up time for a 2.5 hour drive to the middle of nowhere. And then after a long day in the sun, 2.5 hours back means you're getting back to your hotel by supper time (after eating a "free" lunch that's the only real disappointment). Those might turn you off. Don't be a baby. This is your trip. Look at the rest of the reviews on here—the common theme is getting to Chichen Itza ahead of the crowds, getting great shots for the Gram, bailing out before it gets TOO hot or TOO busy, and then a really fun and refreshing dip in a cenote before things get too crazy. Insert Mandolorian gif "THIS IS THE WAY" here. Our tour guides Pastor and Ramiro were fantastic (I cannot fathom how they gave us all the background information on the bus in English and Spanish back to back as fluidly as they did), leading a nice tour across the Yucatan. We slept the first 90 minutes of the ride out to Chichen Itza, and then Pastor gave us a whole background of where we were going and what we would be seeing. (FYI, the bus can get a hair cold, so maybe snuggle up with the towel you need to bring for the cenote.) The guides got our tickets while we waited, and then we wandered the Chichen Itza grounds and got all kinds of background information on how these buildings were so uniquely constructed. LOTS of cool information, albeit a bit rushed... but the alternative is you driving out by yourself and taking hours at the site, and my 16-year-old probably wouldn't have had a huge tolerance for a LOT more time out there. The tour IS fast-paced, without a ton of time to dilly dally, and it's hot and sunny AF, so bring hats for shade, UV covers, sunscreen, and maybe even an umbrella. 10/10, though, would recommend. We loaded up the bus, and a 40 minute drive later, we ended up at the Chichikan cenote, which was a whole tourist spot. They start you out with a little Shaman ceremony to "bless" your trip in, and then there IS one of those "10 minutes at this artisan shop where we hard-sell you stuff". Get past that, and then you're given 90 minutes to split between eating at a buffet and going into the cenote. Buffet is mid for sure, and the drinks are expensive, but without breakfast and after being in the sun all day, it wasn't the worst thing in the world (but admittedly probably our worst meal over the course of the week in Mexico). When you go into the cenote, you ARE required to have a lifejacket on, which isn't the end of the world, but it is a THING. After all that, on the way out, there is a tequila tasting station that I blew off, just counting on and expecting it to be a tourist trap thing... and boy did I mistime and misread it. The tequila was legitimately good (I'll dream about their coffee one for the rest of my life), and I probably should have brought a $60 bottle home because it was absolutely dope. Loaded up and LONG trip back, but dropped off right where we were picked up, right outside my hotel. Would absolutely recommend! The only little *thing* I'd point out is that what you're paying here on Viator/Amigo Tours is for the bus and tour guide—you will have to pay an addition $40ish to enter Chichen Itza, plus another (I think) $8 for the required life jacket. But hey... you GOT to do it. Just keep in mind that that'll essentially double your price. But there's no way you're doing all this without GOING FOR IT, so just plan accordingly. (To Amigo Tour's credit, you can pay that additional cost off a credit card or Apple Pay on the bus, so don't worry about cash money other than tipping the driver/guides.)

Would highly recommend this perfect combo tour! Fun and great price. - I'm in my late 20s and came with my partner for a wedding at an all inclusive place, but we both still wanted to see Chichen Itza and a cenote, but we weren't sure how to go about it. We planned pretty last minute, and we're really glad we booked this! We're from the US. I booked based on a recommendation from my bestie who went with some of her girlfriends a few months prior. We had Carmen as our guide and Jose as our driver. Loved that this excursion was early! We were one of the first groups to enter Chichen Itza and avoided the massive crowds and crazier heat. It really does take the full day though. I believe some may have been picked up earlier, but I got picked up at 5:30 from my hotel. Met up with the main bus at a gas station with others then headed out to the main attraction. The drive took about 2-2.5 hrs, which was good for a nap. Walked around with Carmen, had many opportunities to take photos, listened to fun facts, and even heard Carmen teach us some Mayan words/phrases. I think it was great to know that Carmen is Mayan/part Mayan, which made the experience even more fantastic. She was enthusiastic, funny, and really kind. After the Chichen, we drove about 40 minutes to the Cenote. This is where we ate lunch, did a casual tequila tasting, and got to enjoy the beautiful cenote. It was a perfect combination tour! We did have a small delay because two people didn't come back to the bus on time... We waited for them for about 20 minutes and the staff even tried searching for them, but they weren't responding to messages or found. Ultimately, the staff decided for us to head out first to respect our time, but I also appreciated their efforts to wait and try to find the missing people. I got back in time to my resort for the wedding activities. Again, very glad this early tour was an option and got to hit some spots I wanted to see but had no idea how to plan to go on my own. The tour group accepts USD, card, and pesos for any extra payments. I brought pesos and would recommend doing so for the guide, but they are very flexible. I also think this tour was very much worth the money, and gave me the opportunity to tip a bit more since the cost of the actual booking was one of the cheapest I saw online.

Highly recommend the early tour! - I’m really glad we opted for the early tour. It was so hot at Chichén Itza even early in the morning. By the time we left, it was even hotter and way, way more crowded. The lunch and cenote was a welcome break after the heat. Frank was our guide and he did a great job explaining Mayan culture and the history of the sites and buildings. Alex was our driver and did a great job. It was a really long day, though. We left around 5 am and got back after 5 pm. But I definitely recommend the tour as long as you’re prepared for the long day.

Good tour, but recommend... - Good tour, but recommend a few things for more customer satisfaction. (1) Collect all fees up front - at time of purchase - instead of on the bus there. Paying additional fees for Chichen Itza tax and Cenote life jackets on day of tour is not ideal. Plus the $39 per person for Chichen Itza "tax" is actually just the entry fee to the site. The entire tour ends up being more than double the advertised "price" by the time you add these items. (2) Provide 1 water bottle per person (3) Allow people to take photos for 5 minutes before Tour Guide begins his speech at the Temple. By the time our tour guide finished talking there were many more people than when we first arrived. (4) One language per bus. Our tour guide had to say everything twice - once in English and another time in Spanish. It made the bus ride less relaxing having to listen to an entire hour of information with two languages.
