Assin Manso Slave River
Assin Manso - The tour begins at the pick-up location and heads directly to the Assin Manso Slave River Site. This site was historically significant as the place where slaves took their last bath and were branded for identification on African soil before being marched to the slave castles of Elmina and Cape Coast. Here, they awaited transport to the new world. At the site, you will find an Ancestral Graveyard (the Memorial Wall of Return) where many visitors from the diaspora inscribe their names to mark the discovery of their roots. As part of the experience, visitors remove their shoes and walk barefoot down a path to the river to wash their feet, hands, and faces, offering prayers in gratitude for the opportunity to return.
Kakum National Park - The tour continues to Kakum National Park and Canopy Walk, located inland from Cape Coast and known as Ghana’s most visited attraction. The forest spans an area of 375 square kilometers (145 sq mi). Notable endangered species in the park include the Diana monkey, giant bongo antelope, yellow-backed duiker, and African elephant. It is also an Important Bird Area, with the bird area fully overlapping the park. The bird inventory has confirmed 266 species in the park, including eight species of global conservation concern. The park’s most famous feature is its 7 suspension bridges, forming a 333-meter-long canopy walkway suspended up to 27 meters above the forest floor from trees that are over 300 years old.
Elmina Slave Castle and the Fishing Village Tour
Elmina Castle - Drive along the scenic coast to the Elmina fishing village, which is both picturesque and thought-provoking. Immerse yourself in the local culture by meeting the fishermen to learn about their trade and the challenges they face daily. Next, meet the fishmongers (women) in the village who will demonstrate the various stages of smoking fish in earthenware ovens.
