Weather dependent - Bad weather! Cloudy and drizzling made it hard to view the volcano. The confirmation indicated 6 am pick up but I was actually picked up at 7 am.

See above - The tour guides were great and made the best out of the experience. However, it would have been good to know that the volcano looks nothing like the picture and there is no water! The stop at the town on the was was also too short to have food and shop and enjoy and it was rushed!

No Lake? - Our half day hike was different than expected. Pick up time in the description stated 6:00, our email said 6:30. I did confirm with the tour that 6:30 was the correct time. Usually, the time stated in the description is based on the time you start your departure on your tour. On the way we could not hear our guide because the microphone was broken. So, there was no history explained about the terrain or mountain. The most disturbing thing was that the tour company did not inform us of the weather conditions on top of the mountain, my husband and I were prepared because we did investigate what the temperature would be and dressed accordingly. So many people on our tour did not know about the weather and were freezing. The winds were strong and with the cold many people returned to the bus. I was expecting to see a beautiful lake in the center of the crater; however, it was bare due to the season. I do think that the tour company should show pictures of the crater for each month so expectations of seeing a lake are realistic. The Basilica de los angeles church had services when we arrived, I did not realize that it was still an active church, it was beautiful from what we could see without interrupting the service. Then we headed back to our hotel.

Too little time at the Volcano & too much time on the bus! - We spent 4.5 hrs on a bus out of a 6 hr tour just picking up people & getting to the volcano. We stopped at Turrialba Volcano for a 10 min photo op & had only 50 min at the Irazu Volcano. No time to hike to the top. Although the tour guide was pleasant & knowledgeable this was very disappointing since we had very little time at the actual site.

What a disappointment. Tour guide says: Not much to see here - We have been in CR 12 days and taken many tours. This one is the worst. Do not take this tour. I read other reviews that said the same, but I did not believe them. Here are the reasons: 1. In the dry season, (Dec to March) there is NO LAKE! It is an empty dry crater. 2. It takes 2 to 3 hours to get there depending on your pick-up location and they spend 20 minutes at the top of the volcano. That is not worth the time, IMHO. 3. Although they say that on a clear day you can see the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, this tour does not take you to the point where that can be seen. They merely point it out. 4. In the words of the tour guide today: "Well, as you can see, there is not much to see here..." so 20 minutes is enough. I think that sums it up. But if you need more, Tropical Expeditions does not have the amazing customer service we have experienced throughout our visit to CR. Our tour guide arrived to pick-us up at 6:40 am, though our voucher said 7:30 am. He left without picking us up since we weren't ready, told us to meet him by taxi at 7:30 am at another location and left there without us again (though we arrived at 7:27 am and have a taxi stamped time receipt to prove it). The tour company paid us back for the 2 taxis, but really, they should have just looped back around to pick us up given the mix-up.
