Highlights
  • Idanha-a-Velha - Established during the Roman era, Idanha-a-Velha is an “open-air museum” that holds a significant place among the country’s archaeological sites. This extraordinary architectural and archaeological site is designated as a National Monument and is part of Portugal’s network of Historic Villages.

We will explore its walls, cross a Roman bridge, and uncover its crucial role in the defense of Portuguese territory.

  • Historic Village of Monsanto - Monsanto is considered the most remarkable village in Portugal. The village’s stone houses are seamlessly integrated into the rocky mountainside. Following a trail, you can reach the mountain’s summit where the unique Castelo de Monsanto is situated.

Recently, Monsanto served as a filming location for the prequel House of the Dragon, featuring as “The Dragon Stone.”

We will stroll through this stunning village, taking in its landscape and architecture until we arrive at the Castle. Upon reaching the Castle, we will visit the filming locations.

Pedestrian walk - approx. 3km

  • Penha Garcia - Its origins are shrouded in mystery. The Templar Castle, perched atop a hill, provides an ideal view over the deep Ponsul valley, where this geo-monument preserves numerous traces of life from 480 million years ago, when these quartzite ridges were part of a vast sea. During that time, the region was near the South Pole, and trilobites and their predators dominated an impressive aquatic ecosystem. Today, it is the “cradle” of Geopark Naturtejo, the first Portuguese member of the UNESCO World Geoparks Network.

We will also visit its charming river beach, where you can cool off during the summer months.

This is an absolutely unmissable tour that we will cover for about 1.5 km

  • Praia Fluvial de Penha Garcia - On hot afternoons in Beira Baixa, you can enjoy the river beach of Penha Garcia.

Incredible experience! - Our guide communicated with us before our arrival and after. He came to our hotel in Lisbon and was willing to transport us to Monsanto which was a long drive. Once there we were mesmerized with the unbelievable views and incredible climb to the top of the village and castle. We were transported back in time as Francisco amazed us with his knowledge of the history, places and people. We were introduced to some of the native residents and walked with us for over 2 hours at our pace. Then we had a fabulous late lunch at Restaurante O Carlos and then a tour of Idanha-A-Velma which was amazing. Even though it was a long day, we recommend this tour for an experience of a lifetime.

Spectacular Monsanto - We spent a wonderful day with Francisco of Beira Tours exploring Monsanto. This pristine village is like nothing we’ve ever seen. Quaint homes nestled into massive rock formations along narrow cobblestone streets and stone walls dripping with bougainvillea. Making the arrangements went smoothly and communication through social media was prompt. Francisco whose English was excellent, was informative, patient and had a great sense of humour. We couldn’t have been happier with our day. Thank you Francisco!
