Highlights
  • Cerveteri - Cerveteri is a town and comune of northern Lazio in the region of the Metropolitan City of Rome. Known by the ancient Romans as Caere, and previously by the Etruscans as Caisra or Cisra, and as Agylla (or Αγυλλα) by the Greeks, its modern name derives from Caere Vetus used in the 13th century to distinguish it from Caere Novum (the current town).

It is the site of the ancient Etruscan city[3]which was one of the most important Etruscan cities with an area more than 15 times larger than today’s town.

Caere was one of the city-states of the Etruscan League and at its height, around 600 BC, its population was perhaps around 25,000 – 40,000 people.

Additional Information

As part of the initiative launched with the Cerveteri Archeological Museum, the necropolis too has been enhanced with a dynamic multimedia journey. Eight tombs have been equipped with multimedia installations, offering audiovisual simulations of how the environment might have looked in bygone times. Besides, the Necropolis provides a bookshop, restrooms, and dining areas, complete with indoor and outdoor seating, ideal for breaks during your tour.

Exploring the brightly-lighted tombs offers an evocative experience, bringing you closer to the ancient Etruscans and their enigmatic death rituals.

The Necropolis of Banditaccia holds the title as the largest ancient burial ground in the Mediterranean region.

Interesting fact: it was named in the late 19th-century when Cerveteri landlords announced through public proclamation that the land in the area was available for leasing to the local populace (from the Italian term ‘bandire’, hence ‘Banditaccia.)
