Highlights
  • Transfiguration Monastery - The Monastery of Metamorphosis (Transfiguration) is located approx. 10 km south of the city of Chania in the area Varypetros. This newly built monastery situated on a rocky hill under the ruins of the Byzantine castle “Kastellos” is part of the Monastery of Chrisopigi. This expansion is a continuation of the century long ascetic tradition of the monastery. The aim is the creation of an assemblage, where the structured and unstructured space is in balance so as to highlight the natural environment and its harmonious relationship with the buildings. This place was blessed with the presence, in 2002, of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who walked along the paths of the region and laid the foundation stone of the new monastery temple, dedicated to the Transfiguration of Jesus.
  • The Monumental Olive Tree of Vouves - The Olive tree of Vouves is probably one of the oldest olive trees in the world, which remains productive to this day. The exact age of the tree cannot be determined. While tree ring analysis demonstrated the tree to be at least 2000 years old, scientists from the University of Crete have estimated it to be 4000 years old. In 1997 it was declared a protected natural monument and, in October 2009, the Olive Tree Museum of Vouves was inaugurated in a nearby 19th-century house, displaying traditional tools used in the process of olive cultivation. As of the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, olive branches “kotinos” from this ancient olive tree were used for the wreath of Marathon winners in every Olympic game. Every year over 20,000 people from all over the world visit this ancient tree.
  • Cretan Brewery S.A. - The Cretan Brewery is located in Zounaki village, just 25 km away from Chania city center in the municipality of Platanias and is accommodated in a highly sophisticated industrial installation of 1500 m^2 surrounded by orange trees and olive groves.
The Cretan Brewery uses high quality malts from both Greece and Belgium, hops from all over the world and crystal water from the White Mountains of Crete to brew the Charma beer, the first beer from Chania, blonde or dark, full flavored, aromatic, refreshing and easy to drink, an established choice for both local people and visitors.

Amazing Tour Guides! - Christine and Thanasis were great hosts and tour guides throughout our stay in Chania! They were both very friendly and very accommodating to our large group and the cost of their trips were great value for money. They had great recommendations and always ensured we were happy and comfortable, couldn’t recommend more!

This tour did not disappoint. Wonderful - We had a wonderful private tour with this company and we were able to modify our tour to suit our interests. The service was exceptional from our pickup at the cruise terminal, our knowledgeable guide Christine, and the wonderful places we saw. Our tour started with panoramic views of the Chania old town and the mountains, followed by a guided walking tour around the port and thru the old town, we chose the brewery stop and were not disappointed - great beers (and the food looked amazing) - we then had a beautiful scenic drive up thru the gorge to a lunch stop for some local food. This tour was definitely a highlight of our trip. I hope I can come back to this beautiful island as there was so much more to see.

Phenomenal tour of monestaries, world’s oldest olive tree, historical landmarks, raki & wine tasting & exploring Chania - I had the trip of a lifetime with my husband earlier this month. I can honestly say that in all of my years of traveling, I’ve never had tour guides that I can call friends…until I met Christine & Thanasis with SeaByBus. They were both very knowledgeable & passionate about their town. It was a treat to learn interesting details & the history from locals! (Side note: I’m a little jealous most Cretan families have their very own olive trees!!) The first day of touring was a little overcast & rainy, but our guides worked very hard to coordinate our excursion with indoor wine tastings & tours of historical monestaries, & breathtaking countryside views of Chania. (Oh, and despite the rain, we had an absolute blast!) When the rain stopped we ended our first day admiring the world’s oldest olive tree while sipping Crete’s finest (& strongest) coffee. (A minor mention that we also got a little sample of Crete’s famous aperitif, raki! Yamas!) On day two, Christine & Thanasis took us to a lovely local vineyard, Dourakis. We had a phenomenal time & took two bottles home with us. Our guides then took us to little villages to explore the town & we were delighted to shop in Rethimno, (a city by the sea) & enjoyed my favorite evening of the entire trip…the old Venetian port of Chania with an Egyptian-built lighthouse! As mentioned earlier, this one of my favorite experiences on a tour thus far, and truly hope to stay in touch with our fabulous guides, Christine & Thanasis.
