Monopati Xyloskalo - Linoseli - We are going to have a drive to Omalos plateau at an elevation of 1240 meters for about an hour. From there, we will ascend to the summit of Gigilos at 2080 meters and return. The journey by car traverses the Agyia valley initially, then continues ascending through the mountains, weaving through quaint villages before culminating at the Omalos plateau.
There, the trek begins on a steep trail with vistas of the Samaria Gorge, the peaks of the White Mountains, and the Omalos plateau. In the initial segment, we encounter various trees such as cypresses and oddly shaped prunus, typically sculpted by the year-round climatic conditions (snow, wind, etc.). The path then winds through towering rock formations (the towers of Gigilos) resembling spires and also passes through an arch known as Xepitira.
The landscape grows increasingly untamed as the mountain’s natural architecture unfolds, leading into the alpine zone. Roughly an hour from the start, there’s a spring with potable water where you can refill your bottle. As you climb higher, the trail gets steeper until you reach Linoseli at 1700 meters elevation, offering views of the Tripiti Gorge and the Libyan Sea. Continuing the ascent, a modest climb brings you to the summit. The panorama is breathtaking. You’ll return by the same route.
