Highlights
  • Chengdu - There are a million reasons Chengdu is an international food destination. It’s a UNESCO city of gastronomy. It’s the most popular Chinese cuisine in China. It has the highest per-capita ratio of restaurants in all of China. And at the same time, visitors know very little about food in Chengdu.

Travel by tuktuk and encounter spots you could never find on your own for a mix of street food, sit-down restaurants, and family-run joints:

Chengdu Street Crepes: This classic local street food comes in one of 4 flavor profiles: sweet, salty, spicy, and strange at a street-stall-turned-shop.

Sichuan-style Wontons: Learn why locals call them “Chaoshou,” at a family restaurant where they’re made to order.

All the Noodles: Originally served on the street by men who carried the ingredients around on bamboo poles, Dandan noodles are possibly the OG hawker dish.

Classic Sichuan Dishes: Sample local delicacies like Mapo Tofu (there’s plenty of not-so-spicy dishes here too).

We zipped around the city in a fun tuk-tuk, stopping at local eateries tourists wouldn't find on their own. The food was incredible, with a great mix of classic Sichuan dishes and some hidden surprises. Plus, our guide Fiona was super informative and friendly, sharing interesting tidbits about the city and its food culture. Highly recommend for anyone looking for an authentic Chengdu food experience!

Fiona is the best! If you would like to do a tour, ask for her! - The tour started at 6 pm at the meeting point. There we met our tour guide Fiona and had a chat about life, culture, learning languages and of course food while waiting for the others, looking at you my south american friends. ;-) The group of attendees was a great mix of cultures and humor. I enjoyed it from the first second on. So we started to our first spot by tuktuk. I will not spoil but every dish was great! Fiona is a great food tour guide. We loved her outgoing funny attitude of guiding the group through the tour and explaining the food and of course the Mandarine pronunciation of the food and restaurants. Thank you Fiona, you are the best!

Great food tour! - We had a great food tour with George in Chengdu. All of the stops had delicious examples of local food prepared by small family restaurants. George grew up eating at several of the places we tried. We’ve done many food tours in countries around the world and the Lost Plate Food Tours are some of the best!

Excellent food and Guide - The Food on this tour was amazing. Our guide Fiona was so knowledgeable and was able to answer all our questions and know her stuff about the food in Chengdu. We had some excellent food including Ma Po Tofu which was one of our favorites. The only down side I found to this tour was that the tuktuk was a little cramped and it was a bit uncomfortable getting from place to place but we had some very tall people in our group. However this did not take away from the amazing food we had and I would still recommend this tour to everyone. At the end of the evening Fiona took us for plum wine and even taught us how to play mahjong which was fun.
