On this excursion, we journey through the bustling region of Georgetown. Populated with diverse, specialized bazaars that have stood the test of time, this area is filled with narrow, labyrinthine streets, storage spaces, comprehensive wholesale markets, roadside vendors, and retail stores. Known initially as ‘Black Town,’ this area emerged in the late 17th century, following the establishment of Fort St. George. Local settlers began trading and conducting business with the fort. In the 18th century, a section of Black Town was leveled to create an open space outside Fort St. George. The inhabitants of Black Town relocated just past this open area, forming what was then known as New Black Town. Midway through the 19th century, the open space (previously known as Black Town) was used to erect the majestic Madras High Court. In 1910, during King George’s visit to India, Black Town was renamed Georgetown. Today, Georgetown retains its status as a bustling marketplace selling a wide range of items, including bangles, clothing materials, fruits, vegetables, herbs, stationery items, jewelry, and more.
