Highlights
  • Complejo Arqueologico Chinchero - Chinchero is a small Andean Indian village located high up on the windswept plains of Anta at 3765m about 30km from Cusco. There are beautiful views overlooking the Sacred Valley of the Incas, with the Cordillera Vilcabamba and the snow-capped peak of Salkantay dominating the western horizon. Chinchero is believed to be the mythical birthplace of the rainbow. Its major claim to tourism is its colourful Sunday market which is much less tourist-orientated than the market at Pisac. The village mainly comprises mud brick (adobe) houses, and locals still go about their business in traditional dress. The village may have been an important town in Inca times. The most striking remnant of this period is the massive stone wall in the main plaza which has ten trapezoidal niches. The construction of the wall and many other ruins and agricultural terraces (which are still in use) are attributed to Inca Tupac Yupanqui who possibly used Chinchero as a kind of country resort.

Pisac is famed for its handicraft market, held every Sunday, and its Incan fortress situated on a hilltop.

Must do if in Cusco - Interesting stops, fascinating history, and loved the unique salt mines. It is a long day but a good one to rest up in between doing the big excursions around Cusco.

Maras - Excellent experience with Peru Amazon Trips. The most notable thing is the Maras salt mines, they use the ancient method of extracting salt without damaging the environment. Highly recommended.

Sacred Valley, combines natural beauty with history and culture - The Sacred Valley tour offers a unique experience of enjoying magnificent landscapes: impressive mountains, terraced fields, and magnificent archeology represented by the ancient structures of Ollantaytambo and Pisac. During the tour, we were able to interact with the local population, who still preserves their Andean traditions, and visit local markets such as Pisac, which offer a wide variety of artisan products, textiles, and food. The guide provided us with important information about Inca history and mythology, allowing us to learn more about the fascinating Inca civilization. Overall, the Sacred Valley tour was an enriching experience that combines natural beauty with history and culture, and offers the opportunity to appreciate the Inca heritage and modern life in the region.

It is better to divide the program into two days - We knew from the start that it would be a long day, but the tour description didn't quite correspond to the actual itinerary. - Chinchero: First the process of processing wool is explained. Basically very interesting, but everything was rattled off pretty quickly. You just noticed that tons of tourists come here every day. We then had the opportunity to buy products made from alpaca wool. The second stop, at the Chinchero archaeological site, was very interesting and our guide knew many facts. In general we were super happy with him. He explained a lot and was friendly. - Moray: Here, according to our guide's explanations, we only had 10 minutes of free time to look at the site. But you can at least see the entire terraces from the upper viewpoint, so it was okay that we didn't have time to go down. - Maras: First stop was at a shop that sells local products (salt, chocolate, etc.). Although quite interesting, we increasingly got the impression that the focus of the tour was not just on the sites, but also on the sales. At the salt mines we only had time for the upper viewpoint. We would have liked to go closer to the pools. - Urubamba: Lunch here was amazing! Also very suitable for vegetarians and vegans. - Ollantaytambo: Probably the most stressful stop. There were extremely many people there, which limited the already short time even more. - Pisaq: The time allocated here was quite good. However, we didn't need the subsequent stop at the silver workshop/jeweler. Based on the description, we were hoping that this tour would involve less rushing from one place to another, and we were therefore a little disappointed. However, our guide was great and the respective places are absolutely worth seeing. If you have more time, it is best to split the Sacred Valley into two days.
