Bucharest

Old Town - On the first day of your Classic Romania Tour, our guide will pick you up for a city tour of Bucharest, where Western and Eastern European cultures blend beautifully. Despite this exotic mix, the influence of the communist regime is unmistakable.

Your Bucharest day tour starts with the city’s most distinctive building from the communist era, the Palace of the Parliament. Please note that the Palace of the Parliament is currently closed until June and will be replaced with Spring Palace. Also known as the House of the People, this impressive structure is the second largest building in the world after the Pentagon, according to the Guinness World Records. As you walk through its grand marble rooms, your guide will share the grim details of its construction.

The tour continues with a visit to Bucharest’s Old Town, home to several architectural gems and notable buildings. This area is the city’s nightlife hotspot, and its vibrant atmosphere will give you a true sense of Bucharest’s vibe. The tour concludes, and we will head to the hotel.

Overnight in Bucharest.

Bucharest - Curtea de Argeș - Sibiu

Centrul Istoric - Breakfast.

On the second day, we will depart from Bucharest to the beautiful region of Transylvania. Our first stop is the Curtea de Arges Monastery, a stunning religious site at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains. We will then drive through the Olt Valley, admiring the region’s untouched landscapes before reaching Cozia Monastery, a site reflecting national medieval art and architecture. *In the summer (Mid June to Early November), the trip to Cozia Monastery will be replaced with a drive on the Transfăgărășan.

Next, we arrive in Sibiu, named the European Capital of Culture in 2007. Here, we will take a walking tour of the city, exploring the Main Square, the Brukenthal Museum, and the Roman Catholic Cathedral before visiting Huet Square and its Evangelical Church.

We will then pass through the passage of stairs and cross the famous Bridge of Lies.

Overnight in Sibiu.

Sibiu - Sibiel - Alba Iulia - Turda - Cluj-Napoca

Cluj Napoca - Breb - Barsana - Sighetu Marmatiei

UNESCO Wooden Churches - Sighetu Marmatiei - Targu Mures

Targu Mures Fortress - Breakfast.

On the fifth day of your Romania tour, you will visit two ancient wooden churches that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site: Poienile Izei (Iza Meadows) and Barsana, the latter being one of the largest Orthodox architectural ensembles in Romania. The art of woodcarving, perfected over generations, remains the main craft of the local community, as you will see in a local artisan’s workshop. After the presentation, you can purchase unique handmade souvenirs.

Today, you will have the chance to taste local products in one of Romania’s most picturesque and well-preserved regions. The locals still use their own garden harvests to create delicious dishes.

In the evening, we will arrive in Targu Mures, a city known for its ethnic and cultural diversity.

Overnight in Targu Mures.

Targu Mures - Biertan - Sighisoara - Viscri - Brasov

Brasov Historical Center - Breakfast.

We will visit Biertan, the largest fortified church in Transylvania, built by the Saxons in the sixteenth century and now a UNESCO monument.

A highlight of the Classic Romania Tour is Sighișoara, the only inhabited medieval fortress included in UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. Walking up the winding cobblestone streets lined with historic buildings, we reach the Clock Tower, a city symbol, offering breathtaking views. The Tower houses a museum of medieval weapons and a torture chamber. After visiting the tower, we’ll climb the three hundred wooden steps to the Church-on-the-Hill, built in the 14th century.

Fascinated by the countryside life and the peaceful atmosphere of this Transylvanian village, His Royal Highness, Prince Charles, restored one of the traditional houses, making it his annual retreat in May. Besides admiring the specific architecture of Viscri houses, we’ll enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride through the village, providing an opportunity to enjoy the calm, rural scenery, and we will stop to visit the locals and enjoy some homemade cake.

Then, we will reach Brasov, a city founded by the Teutonic Knights, located at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains.

Overnight in Brasov.

Brasov - Bran - Sinaia - Bucharest

Old Town - Breakfast.

In Brașov, we will take a walking tour of the city, exploring one of the narrowest streets in the world, visiting the beautiful Council Square, and finally admiring the famous Gothic cathedral, the Black Church.

Next, we will visit the famous Bran Castle on a tour from Brașov. Here, you will discover the legend of Dracula in a full Bran Castle tour. Bran is one of the world’s spookiest medieval castles, commonly known as Dracula’s Castle. Built in the 13th century, it stands strategically atop a 60-meter cliff, overlooking the main access route into medieval Transylvania.

We’ll then visit a small but notable mountain resort, which gained fame thanks to the royal family who chose Sinaia as their residence in the 20th century. Our first stop will be the Orthodox Monastery in Sinaia, followed by Peles Castle, a splendid Gothic-style castle built by Romania’s first king, Carol I of Hohenzollern. Here, you will take a castle tour and learn about the Romanian royal family’s life.

In the evening, we will return to Bucharest.

Gorgeous country, great guide and wonderful experience! - My teen son and I had a wonderful time on this tour! The other group canceled, so we actually got a private tour. Our guide, Marcel, did a fabulous job of explaining the scenery and culture of the country. He also had really interesting information about the different regions of Romania and how they have been influenced by the varying historical influences. I would highly recommend a trip to Romania, the group Rolandia and our guide, Marcel

Fabulous private tour of Romania with Rolandia Tours - We booked a private 8 day tour of Romania with Rolandia Tours and they did a fabulous job of making sure we had the best time ever!! They lined us up with a Tour Guide name Laurentiu. He was fantastic!!! He was extremely knowledgable of all the places we visited throughout Romania. It was all natural for him and it was not scripted and he knew the history of each sight. He was very laid back and was never in a rush. He had a great personality and a good sense of humor. He made our entire trip fun and interesting. He took us to all of the main sights on our itinerary, as well as some off the beaten path sights. We got a true understanding and feeling of what life in Romania is all about. The hotels they booked us in were all conveniently located to all of the main attractions and were all unique boutique type hotels. Lauentui knew where all the great restaurants were along the way and we ate like kings and the food was excellent. Romania is a vast and beautiful country. Everything ran smooth and was perfect. We had the best time anyone could ever ask for. We would highly recommend Rolandia and Laurentiu for all your travel needs throughout Romania.

Great trip through Transylvania - Our guide Alex was fantastic. He has a great personality, a great depth of knowledge, and he is a master at finding good parking places everywhere we stopped. It really felt like taking a tour with a good friend and not just a tour guide. I highly recommend any tour that Alex is leading.

Memorable Romanian Tour! - We were traveling to Romania for our son’s wedding and wanted to learn and explore as much as possible the week before. We took the small group Classic Romanian Tour and we would highly recommend this tour. It is a well-organized fast paced tour covering a lot of the country but you are never bored with interesting stops, beautiful scenery and a wonderful tour guide -Alex-who is kind, incredibly knowledgeable, great driver and willing to put up with our endless stream of questions. The hotels were perfectly situated for exploring and comfortable with good breakfasts. Romania is a beautiful country with a long and complicated history this tour is a great introduction and you will be in good hands with Rolandia.

Fantastic trip! - This September I opted to join Rolandia's 8-day Classic Tour as I was attracted by its comprehensive itinerary, and boy, I wasn't disappointed! Its programme is indeed well-conceived, allowing you to gain a deep understanding of the country's history, geography, culture and traditions. It is also a thorough one, covering some of the best urban, rural and mountainous areas. Furthermore, activities are foreseen that give you the opportunity to interact with locals of different backgrounds, thereby gaining insight of life in the country. Although the itinerary is quite a packed one, there's still enough downtime set aside in the evening to recharge your batteries. The group was also a small one, which I found to be quite positive. We were blessed with the best guide imaginable - Nicu. He is a punctual, very knowledgeable, down to earth, fluent person with a great sense of humour, who goes out of his way to ensure you have the best possible experience in his country. He was also our driver throughout the whole week, and I felt very safe as a passenger. Communication with the tour manager Nicu A. was also a very positive experience. I highly recommend travelling with this local tour operator. You're in for a treat! ;)

Excellent 8 day tour in Transylvania and Maramures - I was born in Romania but have been living in California for about 37 years. I have not been to Romania in about 20 years and decided to take the wife and kids (15 and 10yo) on a tour in Romania so the kids, who were born in US, would get a taste of their parent's native land. We were to meet at my wife's parents who live in Constanta and take the grandparents on the tour with us as well. I decided to book the tour with Rolandia based solely on the good reviews they had online, but didn't really know what to expect. It turns out the tour was truly great. Rolandia was really easy to deal with, basically I got my questions answered and the trip all arranged in just a few emails. Rolandia worked with us to customize part of the standard Classic 8-day Tour to suit our needs. For example they arranged for us to be picked up and dropped off at my wife's parents house in Constanta which really made it a lot easier for us. They have also arranged the accommodations to suit two families, us with the kids and grand parents separately. The tour itself was excellent, we visited many interesting historical sites in the toured cities, churches, museums, the salt mine in Turda with the Ferris wheel and lake, which was a hit with the kids. Also visited some beautiful villages, Biertan, Viscri and others, got to dine and interact with local families, and strolled the streets of historic sites such as Alba Iulia, Sigisoara, Sibiu, Cluj, Brasov, and of course Castelul Bran and Peles, to name just a few. The accommodations were very good, at least 4-star and the included breakfast buffets were sumptuous, on par if not better than what you would expect in US for example. The hotels were beautifully located, generally in the historical sites, close to site-seeing attractions and restaurants. In particular we liked the one in Sigisoara's historic center which although modernized it still keeps its 2ft thick walls, massive wooden doors, and forged iron locks, a medieval feel with modern comfort. Finally, I believe the tour wouldn't have been quite the success that it was without our tour guide Marcel. Marcel speaks perfect English, is a swift but careful and courteous driver, and most importantly, he is a trove of historical information and knowledge. He gave us all the historical and up to date information about each site we visited. He also kept the kid's interest by telling them jokes and funny stories and kept them engaged with questions and riddles. In addition, he went out of his way to make everything go smoothly with no hick-ups. For example all tickets were booked on line in advance so we did not have to wait in any lines. He connects easily with the locals, seems to know people everywhere we went, and they all respect him. His love of the place and people there are truly inspiring. Overall this was a great experience and everyone had a good time. The places and people we met were wonderful. Everything went smoothly, Rolandia did a splendid job, they are truly world-class. I would like to thank them for helping us have a good time this summer and helping me personally to reconnect with Romania.

Memorable trip - The ‘classic Romania’ trip organized by Rolandia tours was very well organized: excellent hotel choices, comfortable car, knowledgeable, professional and friendly driver/guide. Although the weather was not always on our side we still had a memorable trip with lots of highlights, interesting facts and encounters and many lovely memories to share with Alex - our young and pleasant companion. I’d add the painted churches of Bukovina as an option to the itinerary.

First Adventure in Romania - I first booked this tour back in 2019 before the pandemic rocked the world. At that time, I had been reassured that Rolandia would respect the conditions of my reservation despite the policy of the third party through which I had booked my tour. 2.5 years later, I was finally able to join the classic tour with one other woman. I had a rocky start because not much was communicated about my first day and how my arrival time which I had provided a couple of weeks in advance of the tour meant that I would not be able to take part in the first day. However, Rolandia worked throughout the duration of my tour to ensure that I could enjoy the city tour and the Spring Palace in Bucharest before I flew out on the last day of my tour. Though I didn't have the opportunity to see the Palace of Parliament, the Spring Palace/ House of the Ceausescu family was a great if not better alternative. The rest of the tour was a great introduction to the many highlights of Romania - beautiful, green countryside, impressive churches, castles, and palaces - as well as the history and culture of the nation. We had opportunities to meet a few people from different regions, which provided a tiny bit of insight into the local people as well. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and did his best to accommodate our interests and visit everything on our extensive itinerary. However, I think that it is important for a guide to take on a more neutral tone when discussing the various ethnic and national groups involved in Romanian's history and current reality. Whatever an individual's personal opinions about different groups and how tour guides should relate to customers, I think that antagonism toward different groups should be kept out of the conversation because with customers coming from various different backgrounds, you can't know how such talk will make them feel throughout the tour. I personally just shut down and honestly feel more negatively about such people and the people they claim to represent. Perhaps that kind of talk suits older customers who likely think the same way, but I am from a new age. But the tour itself was executed well and I had the privilege of a wealth of information from my guides.
