Sigiriya, also known as Sinhagiri or Lion Rock (Sinhala: සීගිරිය, Tamil: சிகிரியா/சிங்ககிரி, pronounced see-gi-ri-yə), is an ancient rock fortress situated in the northern Matale District, close to the town of Dambulla in Sri Lanka’s Central Province. This site, notable for its historical and archaeological importance, features a towering granite column that rises about 180 meters (590 feet) high.
