Dublin through Cieran's mouth and eyes - Our guide, Ciaran, took us on this walk through the history, culture, education and contemporary politics of Ireland. We reached 5 minutes late, so he took the trouble to go over what he had already told the others even as we were talking. We are professors of English literature, and Dublin was like a literary pilgrimage for us. We thought we had learnt a lot about Irish history earlier in the process of studying Shaw, Wilde, Joyce, Years, Synge, Beckett etc. But there was so much more that Ciaran narrated while explaining the history and vicissitudes of the sites he made us walk through that we learnt a lot more about it. All of it was narrated from his perspective, and it was serendipitous to realise that he was so like-minded. He was passionate about what he believed in, so very focused on that point of view. His highlighting of subaltern disquiet and rebellion made everything fall in place. It was an amazingly, unbelievably panoramic but ideology -centred introduction to Dublin and Ireland on the first day of our trip. He also knew a lot about Irish literature. But he was not pedantic and did not take himself too seriously. He had a brilliant sense of humour, in which the irony was often directed to himself. He gave us many useful tips about what to do and see in Dublin. It was supposed to be a two hour trip, but he was so passionate about his ideas, views and narration that he carried on for 2.5 hours. Three cheers Cieran!
