Highlights
  • The Junction Lookout - Cycle one of NZ’s Great Ride Routes from Cromwell to Clyde on one of our brand new fleet of bikes. After the ride we then return you to the start point (where you left your car) by our luxury transport.

A 42km ride on an excellent Grade 1-3 trail. The surface is very good compacted gravel. Our recommendation is that riders choose our e-bike option. There is 25km of the trail without any road access.

This is a self guided bike ride so you are free to move along the trail at the speed of your own group. Riders should be 12 years and older (our oldest rider so far has been nearly 80), fit and confident on a bike.

You will see from the photos that this is a great trip for family and friends. The e-bikes allow you to choose your own ‘assistance’ levels (including ‘off’) which ensures that no-one has to put in too much effort or is left behind trying to catch up!

With great places to stop along the way including Carrick Winery, Burger & Coffee Afloat and finishing by buying a quick celebratory drink in historic Clyde before your shuttle back to Cromwell.

Single Riders will be waitlisted. If you are a single rider we will contact you as soon as possible to confirm your booking.

Additional Information

This trail travels alongside Lake Dunstan on the opposite side of the lake to the road that travels between Cromwell and Clyde.

The engineering involved to create this trail is stunning with clip-ons attached to the rockface in places, the Hugo Suspension Bridge plus a very good trail surface throughout the ride.

The views and scenery on this ride are fantastic and you can fully understand the history of the area - from the goldrush to the building of NZ’s largest dam - by reading the information boards along the way.

Location
The Junction Lookout
Meet at the Cromwell Junction Lookout. This is a large circular drive in lookout area. You will see a black Executive Mercedes Sprinter waiting to issue you with your e-bikes. If you are leaving a parked vehicle close-by please park it on the road.

Great day trip! - After a great experience completing the lake hawea trail with nzbiketours, we were excited to try the Dunstan trail which lived up to expectations! From the get go we were given so much useful information by David on route to the drop off point. He even provided each of us with some yummy homemade soup to enjoy along the way! Amazing views along the 40km trail, stopping off at Carrick winery for a well deserved pizza! Highly recommend!

Lake Dunstan 42km trail - The views were amazing! We took so many videos. The personalised touch by David made the experience more enjoyable such as the home made soup and Reggie the Dachshund! David was a great story teller and knew so much about the place which was interesting. Bikes were great and easy to use. The winery was a lovely place for lunch too. A must do if you are in Wanaka, Cromwell, Clyde or surrounding areas.

Great mountain biking experience! - My husband, son & I met James on a freezing winter morning in Cromwell. We enjoyed our conversation with him whilst he set us up on our bikes with our own pedals. My son had a beautiful new gravel bike to ride, and my husband & I had really cool e-bikes that were in great condition. James explained the route, provided us with a map & emergency contact details, did a health & safety check, and handed us three flasks of delicious hot pumpkin soup to take with us! The trail was breathtakingly beautiful and we had some sunshine & very little wind. We stopped for a wine at the vineyard en route & then enjoyed cappuccinos at the end in Clyde. We highly recommend this experience for everyone- there’s nothing too technical (other than a few hills) to ride & James is there if you do need support. The shuttle back was comfortable & James shared many interesting stories about Lake Dunston. Our heartfelt gratitude to David & James for an extraordinary first day in Queenstown, hope to see you again soon!

The best day out in otago - Absolutely the best day out in Otago. The bikes were easy to use, battery power was great up those hills, and the scenery was UNBELIEVABLE. This takes you through parts of New Zealand you would not usually be able to access. Our operator, James, was knowledgeable and reassuring. Loved the shuttle return with a chat about what we were seeing.

NZ Bike Trails are the best! - NZ Bike Trails were absolutely superb from start to finish. They even made us a lovely pumpkin soup to take for our lunch as the floating cafe midway on the Dunstan Cycle Trail had closed for the winter. Dan was outstanding giving us a bit of history of the area and the trail en-route to Clyde where we started. Even better, as we were the only one’s in the group, he was more than happy to wait until the rain subsided before we headed off. He met us as agreed at the 25km mark to make sure we were going okay and was waiting for us at the end. What an incredible day of beautiful scenery and finished off with great customer service and e-bikes provided by NZ Bike Trails. Highly recommend them to anyone who wants to cycle in the area!
