Highlights
  • Dambadeniya Ancient Kingdom Museum - Your tour begins at 6:00 am with a hotel pickup in Colombo. The journey to Dambadeniya takes about 2 hours, so it’s advisable to bring a packed breakfast to enjoy en route.

Dambadeniya thrived in the mid-13th century, particularly under King Parakramabahu II, who was known for his peaceful reign and contributions to Sinhalese literature, including the epic poems ‘Kavisilumina’ and ‘Visuddi Marga Sannasa’. During your visit, you’ll see the recently unearthed remains of the old Temple of the Tooth, which once housed the Tooth Relic, as well as the ruins of the royal palace complex, complete with gardens, walls, and moats.

  • Yapahuwa Rock Fortress - Departing for Yapahuwa at 9:00 am, you’ll arrive by 10:30 am. Yapahuwa became the capital of Sri Lanka following Dambadeniya’s fall to the Dravidians. Built on a massive rock, the fortress features wide staircases, intricate stone sculptures, and detailed pillar carvings, distinguishing it from the Sigiriya rock fortress.

The site later served as a monastery for Buddhist monks. During your visit, you can climb to the fortress and explore the stupa ruins at the summit, which include notable statues and imagery from the Kandyan era. You’ll spend a couple of hours at Yapahuwa before having lunch at a local restaurant.

  • Panduwasnuwara Kingdom - The drive to Panduwasnuwara takes about an hour and a half. This ancient city was one of Sri Lanka’s earliest capitals, dating back to the 5th century BC, and was also used in the 12th century, resulting in a mix of ruins from different periods.

The ruins cover nearly 12 hectares and include the recently restored two-storied former Temple of the Tooth, the royal palace ruins, and the artificial reservoir Panda Wewa, one of the earliest man-made irrigation systems. You’ll also visit the Panduwasnuwara museum, which houses many archaeological finds from the area. You’ll spend an hour and a half here before departing at 5:00 pm to return to your hotel.

  • Yapahuwa Ancient Kingdom - Yapahuwa was a short-lived capital of medieval Sri Lanka. Located between Kurunagala and Anuradhapura, the citadel was built around a large granite rock that rises nearly 100 meters above the surrounding lowlands.

In 1272, King Bhuvenakabahu moved the capital from Polonnaruwa to Yapahuwa to escape Dravidian invasions from South India, bringing the Sacred Tooth Relic with him. After King Bhuvenakabahu’s death in 1284, the Pandyans from South India invaded again and captured the Sacred Tooth Relic. Yapahuwa was then largely abandoned and later inhabited by Buddhist monks and ascetics.

Nice trip - Yapahuwa is a 13th century rock fortress that rises about 300 feet abruptly from the plain. It was the capital of Sri Lanka for just 12 years, from 1272 to 1284. A climb to the top is highly recommended, although dawn or dusk are the best times unless you choose a cloudy day. The sun during the day can be fiercely hot. You will see interesting statues, rock carvings and frescoes. There is also a lovely temple. if you are interest to Visit ruins, you must go yapahuwa, paduwasnuwar.
