Highlights
  • Vehicle Park of Pidurangala Rock & Temple - Pidurangala rock rises approximately 150m above the surrounding plain. As you ascend, you’ll encounter cave dwellings that were historically used by Buddhist monks. Today, a few caves with proper walls are still in use by meditating monks.

The climb is moderately challenging with a somewhat steep incline, unlike Sigiriya. Most of the path features well-constructed boulder steps, and the final stretch requires climbing a few boulders to reach the summit.

The view is breathtaking! This is a ‘must visit’ attraction if you’re in Sigiriya. From the top, you can enjoy a 360-degree panorama.

Additional Information

Pidurangala is a Rock Temple featuring a cave complex. Its history dates back to the 5th Century BC, during the reign of King Kashyapa (477-195 AD). Numerous ancient ruins can be found in and around the main rock. I will provide an overview of the historical background of the Pidurangala Temple, which was the principal temple of that era.

As we ascend, we can see cave dwellings that were once inhabited by Buddhist monks in ancient times. Today, a few caves with proper walls are still used by meditating monks. I will also demonstrate the advanced technology employed by ancient workers to create these caves and discuss their tool technology.
