The Fort was erected by Sher Shah Suri of Afghanistan as a strategy to halt the progress of Mughal emperor Humayun and to quell the local Gakhar tribes of the then Potohar region, who were Mughal allies in sub-continent India. UNESCO recognized Rohtas Fort as a World Heritage Site in 1997, noting it as a ‘remarkable representation of the Muslim military architecture of Central and South Asia. The fort boasts 12 gates, each one constructed in ashlar stone.
