Highlights
  • Theaterplatz - The Theaterplatz in Dresden is a central gathering spot where the city’s voice resonates. Dominated by the grand Semper Opera, the square is surrounded by the Royal Palace, the Cathedral, and the Old Masters Gallery, and is often regarded as one of Europe’s most beautiful squares.
  • The Dresden Zwinger - Conceived as a unified sculptural masterpiece, the Zwinger was intended to be the lavish entrance to a grand royal palace that was never constructed. It stands as a testament to the exotic and extravagant celebrations held here 300 years ago.
  • Royal Palace (Residenzschloss) - Built, destroyed by fire, rebuilt. Repaired and expanded, burned again, and rebuilt once more. The Royal Palace is a diverse guardian of the history of the Saxon ruling family and houses their remarkable collection of treasures. We will walk through one of its courtyards, but you can explore the museums on your own later.
  • Procession of Princes - Stretching 100 meters and composed of 24,000 tiles, this is the longest outdoor porcelain artwork in the world. It holds many secrets and stories—see if you can uncover them!
  • Frauenkirche Dresden - This iconic symbol of Dresden embodies the city’s resurgence from destruction. You will come to understand and appreciate the poignant story behind its reconstruction.
  • Katholische Hofkirche - Dresden’s Royal Cathedral is a stunning edifice. Built covertly by a Catholic ruler in Protestant Saxony, this former court church features some unique characteristics and serves as one of the burial sites for the Royal family. We will view it from the outside and delve into its fascinating history.

The best Historic Walking Tour - The best Historic Walking Tour I have ever been on. Our guide was Karen, she was a fantastic, passionate historian, who was very interesting to listen too and made the walking tour enjoyable with all her knowledge of Dresden, the history of the buildings, the area and further afield. I highly recommend this walking tour and if you're lucky to get Karen you're fortunate too.

Historic Dresden Tour - The tour guide was excellent. She had not only a deep knowledge of the history of Dresden and Germany, but was clearly well-versed in global history and was able to relate to the various attendees from different countries. We got to see some great areas of the city and learn a lot.

Lacking complete feeling for Dresden - While our guide, Karen, was excellent, this tour was a little strange and underwhelming. As everyone knows Dresden was bombed so every building is rebuilt so only somewhat original. On our tour we did not go inside any buildings, even the original Church which was rebuilt. Another of the couples on our tour used a cane so the speed was significantly slowed down and make it feel like we saw very, very little of the city. We did not cross the bridge or even walk to it, and only went inside the grotto. Overall it was a good overview of the city but I was left feeling like we missed out on a more complete tour due to the speed of the group.
