Highlights
  • Dubrovnik Walking Tours - Our tours begin at the Large Onofrio’s Fountain, located next to Hard Rock Cafe. Look for the Red Umbrella where the guide will introduce themselves before we embark on the 1.5-hour Discover Dubrovnik tour.

  • Onophrian Fountain - This starting point offers a brief overview of Dubrovnik’s history, highlighting the rise of the maritime trading city-state of Ragusa and its achievements, including the innovative aqueduct system that the Large Onofrio’s fountain is part of.

  • St. Saviour Church - Adjacent to the fountain, we begin our walk down the main street, passing by the small votive Church of Holy Savior. We discuss the significant role of religion during that era and its influence on the city’s development.

  • The Franciscan Church and Monastery - As we continue, we encounter the Franciscan Church and Monastery, a large complex belonging to the Order of the Friars Minor. It includes a monastery, a church, a library, and a pharmacy. The earliest monastery was built in the 13th century outside the city walls. The 17th-century library houses over 20,000 books, including 1,200 valuable old manuscripts. The pharmacy, dating back to 1317, is the third oldest still-operating pharmacy in the world. We also discuss various local traditions that have endured for centuries.

  • Stradun - We proceed along the main street, Placa or Stradun, the city’s most popular promenade and gathering place. It hosts public feasts and processions and serves as the main business street. This wide and beautiful street divides the city into northern and southern halves. From here, we delve into the city’s layout and its history, including the fall of the Ragusa Republic and the more recent history of Yugoslavia and the Homeland War in the 1990s.

  • Church of the Holy Annunciation - We leave the main street and head towards the Port via the narrower inner streets of Old Town. We stop by the Orthodox Christian Church and discuss the influence of other religious communities, such as Orthodox Christians, Jews, and Muslims, on the city’s history.

  • Monument of Poet Ivan Gundulic - At Gundulic Square, we visit the Green Market to observe and discuss local produce and interesting stories and traditions.

  • Rector’s Palace - One of the city’s most important buildings, the Rector’s Palace, served as the seat of the Rector of the Republic of Ragusa from the 14th century to 1808. It also housed the Minor Council, state administration, an armory, a powder magazine, a watch house, and a prison.

  • Dubrovnik Cathedral - According to legend, Richard the Lionheart was shipwrecked on Lokrum Island near Dubrovnik while returning from the Crusades in 1192. This legend is associated with the Cathedral.

  • City Harbor - Dubrovnik’s ships were renowned throughout the Mediterranean, with galleons from the Republic found in navies across Europe and beyond. These ships were built and loaded in the legendary Arsenal, another stop on the tour. In the Old Port, your guide will share stories of the famous Quarantine and the nearby fortresses of St. Luke and St. John.

  • Orlando Column - Leaving the Port, we arrive at the eastern end of Placa (Stradun) street, under the City Bell Tower, at Luza Square. Here, we cover several interesting stories and monuments, including the church dedicated to the patron St. Blaise, the legend of the knight Orlando and his column, Sponza Palace, Small Onofrio’s Fountain, and the high Bell Tower.

Great history lesson - Ivana was great. We did the history tour of Dubrovnik. The group wasn’t interested in GOT and we were planning to hike the wall later. No major climbing and Ivana did a great job explaining a difficult and complex subject, the history of Dubrovnik. She’s a local, has all the local legends and traditions but speaks perfect English. Highly recommend.

Walking tour in Dubrovnik - The guide was very knowledgeable and informative. He made it very interesting and took us to all the historical sites in the city. It was a very hot day but he found shady areas to stop and talk. I would definitely recommend this walking tour.
