Dutch explorers visited in the 1600s, and it was later named Fremantle after Captain Charles Fremantle. The Fremantle Prison — built by convicts — is now a World Heritage Site. Through commercial deepening, Fremantle turned into a vibrant trade center. In 1929, it was declared a city and played a pivotal role in World War II as the most significant submarine base. The influx of European immigrants post-war, especially from Italy, influenced Fremantle’s atmosphere, which was further transformed after hosting the 1987 America’s Cup. Currently, Fremantle is well-known for its Victorian and Edwardian streetscapes, convict history, as well as a booming arts and food scene.
