Experience the charm of the historical city of Fremantle in a unique way. Before the British arrived, this area was home to the indigenous Noongar people and was known as Walyalup. Dutch explorers visited in the 1600s, and it was later named Fremantle after Captain Charles Fremantle. The Fremantle Prison — built by convicts — is now a World Heritage Site. Through commercial deepening, Fremantle turned into a vibrant trade center. In 1929, it was declared a city and played a pivotal role in World War II as the most significant submarine base. The influx of European immigrants post-war, especially from Italy, influenced Fremantle’s atmosphere, which was further transformed after hosting the 1987 America’s Cup. Currently, Fremantle is well-known for its Victorian and Edwardian streetscapes, convict history, as well as a booming arts and food scene.
