Highlights
  • Archaeological Site of Olympia - Olympia was the birthplace of the most famous and important sporting event in the ancient world. The Olympic Games took place here every four years from 776 BC to 393 AD. The site was also a place of worship dedicated to the Greek god Zeus from about the 10th century BC. Here you will find incredible sculptures such as the decoration of the temple of Zeus, as well as the famous Hermes of Praxiteles and the statue of Nike of Paionios.
  • Archaeological Museum of Olympia - Olympia’s Archaeological Museum is one of the most important museums of Greece. The exhibition contains great masterpieces from the long history of the Olympic Games’ birthplace, and thousands of years of art. The exhibits are displayed in chronological and thematic order from Prehistoric down to Roman times. Here you’ll find the sculptures of the temple of Zeus, the sculpture of “Nike of Paionios” and one of the most famous statues in the history of art, the “Hermes” of Praxiteles, which is perhaps the only original, surviving statue of the renowned sculptor. Guests are treated with the exhibition’s numerous bronze objects: figurines of humans and animals, cauldrons, tripods, griffins, sphinxes, and many different kinds of weapons, vessels, and exquisite examples of the toreutic art. Finally, the large collection of terracotta statues—like the complex of Zeus and Ganymede—is a highlight during any visit.
  • Olympia - Walk to Olympia village nearby the archaeological site and the stadium and wander around the little traditional shops, traditional taverns and coffee shops.

Informative and fun Olympia - Suzie(sp?) gave a great guided tour of Olympia! Very informative with lots of humor as well. She also made sure to be aware of the needs of one of our party with mobility limitations. The beach stop was very nice as well and the guide for the bus pirtion of the tour was also informative.

On site guide was great! - Beautiful and amazing tour of the ruins from the original Olympic site. On site guide was very informative, however got a late start and our group did not get a chance to spend any time in the town of Olympia

Waste of money. No headsets, could not hear or understand the guide. - This tour was awful. Our tour guide at the ancient Olympia site was extremely hard to understand (very thick accent and hard time speaking English) and she was reading off a paper the whole time. She clearly was not knowledgeable of the site, and I would have learned more walking around myself and reading the signs. The worst part was that we were in a large tour group of 40+ people and we were not provided headsets! So not only could we not understand her, we could not hear her at ALL. Paired with the 100+ degree heat this made for an awful experience in a place that I was really excited to visit.
