Diyaluma Falls, the second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka at 220 m (720 ft) and 361st globally, is located 6 km (3.7 mi) from Koslanda in the Badulla District, on the Colombo-Badulla highway. This waterfall originates from Punagala Oya, a tributary of Kuda Oya, which is further a tributary of Kirindi Oya. The term ‘Diyaluma’ or ‘Diya Haluma’ translates to ‘rapid water flow’ or ‘liquid light’ in Sinhalese. As per Sri Lankan historian Dr. R. L. Brohier, the Diyaluma setting is linked with a folklore about a tragic love story of a young chief who was exiled to the highlands and his lover’s failed attempt to join him. While the young woman was climbing up the rope made from twisted creepers, she hit against the rocks and lost her life. In an act of mercy, the gods made water stream down from the mountain, concealing the tragic event, thus giving rise to the name ‘Diyaluma’.
