Additional Information

Join an Archaeologist on a journey through the historic Roman city of Herculaneum, obliterated by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

Herculaneum was a preferred vacation spot for the Roman elite, described by Romans as a compact wonder-box. Its private homes and public structures displayed marble adornments, wall art, mosaic floorings, along with items used in daily life. Often referred to as ‘Pompeii’s sister’, this city boasts some well-preserved findings like wooden doors and refined paintings.

With an Archaeologist guiding you and providing insightful anecdotes, you’ll feel as though you’re strolling through a city frozen in time!

Private tour with an archaeologist is worth the price. - This was the trip of a lifetime for me and a special experience for my adult grandson. We both have read quite a bit about Herculaneum, Pompeii, and the Roman Empire, and it was thrilling to see Herculaneum for ourselves. Our guide was both gracious and informative. At the end of our tour we were allowed to wander a bit by ourselves and to visit the two nearby museums.

Wonderful tour! - When we were met By Roberta at Herculaneum, she was very knowledgeable, friendly and fed us a load of information that was incredibly helpful to understand what community was all about. City is buried under volcanic ash - Herculaneum was buried by volcanic ash spewed by Mt Vesuvius during its eruption during the Roman Empire. The city is buried under 16 meters (52 feet) of ash. Herculaneum is not as well-known as nearby Pompeii, but it is worth exploring the site that is revealed by archaeologists. Herculaneum was popular in ancient times for its location by the coast and its mild and sunny weather. It's not far from Naples; Mt Vesuvius is full of foreboding. This site in southwestern Italy is a favorite destination for visitors.

Fantastic private tour!!! - Definitely a great tour and the only way to learn about ancient site. Our tour guide Daniela was fantastic and so knowledgeable!!!! I have done these tours before and without the guide we were just looking at ruins. But with guide we did so much more. The private tour allowed us to learn so much about ancient life as well as the structures, purposes and what they looked like. Worth the extra cost. Herculaneum is smaller but better preserved than Pompeii.

Lorenzo provides a wealth of information that will adds immeasurably to this awesome experience. - A private tour with Lorenzo turns a visit to Herculaneum into a more meaningful and memorable experience. He adds history from his own research, pictures from a binder that he brings to add to your understanding, and he highlights points of interest with information that is not provided on the printout you are given. He lead us around, so we could look around (instead of at a map) and be sure not to miss anything. He was an excellent teacher! Because he was fun and full of information! I highly recommend him Money well spent.
