- Calle de Carlos Arniches - I will guide the attendees through the traditional tools of Leathercraft, many of which remain unchanged since the Middle Ages. This experience is designed for those interested in exploring a genuine Spanish Leathercraft Workshop and learning the craft of making their own leather goods. Each attendee will get to work with authentic Spanish Cowhide to handcraft a leather item of their choice. In the workshop, attendees can select from a variety of items to create, such as an elegant travel purse (with or without a strap), a distinctive belt, a wallet, two styles of purses, or woven bracelets. Additionally, there’s the option to craft a custom piece not listed, such as a desired handbag, a mobile phone case, or a belt pouch; for this, participants should inform the instructor in advance. I will also acquaint them with the diverse types of leather available. Every creation will be one-of-a-kind, as we’ll employ techniques like stamping or embossing for decoration. For non-Spanish speakers, I am fluent in English, being a native of Ireland. The workshop will be intimate, allowing us to interact and get to know each other at a leisurely pace.

This workshop presents attendees with the exciting chance to craft their very own custom leather item using nothing more than their own two hands and a touch of creativity. Participants have the freedom to opt for crafting a wallet, a travel pouch, a handbag, a belt - or perhaps something entirely of their own design. Don’t worry about difficulty - the instructor will guide you every step of the way. The joy of fashioning a functional, durable, and appealing handmade item is second to none! A notable highlight of this gathering is its location - the heart of Madrid’s oldest neighborhood, La Latina, near the Cebada Square. This is an area known for El Rastro - the largest street market held every Sunday, a treasure trove of Antiques and Handmade goods, accompanied by a vast array of eateries, bars, and coffee shops. One of the prominent streets is Ribera de Curtidores or the Tannery Street, famous for its numerous Leather shops.

Go to La Latina metro station, exit to Plaza La Cebada, Calle Toledo. Walk towards Puerta Toledo, turn down second street to the left, Lopez Silva. Continue to Vara de Rey Square, cross it and you will find Carlos Arniches Street, its nº 9, fifth floor fourth door (press bell 5.4).

Trip highlight! - Our family (with kids aged 14 and 17) thoroughly enjoyed our time in the workshop. It was such an enjoyable experience learning simple leather work techniques in a relaxed atmosphere (and with great music too)! Mike was very patient with our special project ideas and helped us quickly design, and pivot, patterns which we could complete during the workshop, even generously staying beyond the allotted time. This was a great addition to our time in Madrid that really rounded out our visit. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a unique and authentic experience.

Fun and great hands on experience with leather - It was a great way to spend our morning in the workshop, we chose what we would like to make, the colours of the leather etc. Michael is our host, he encouraged our hands on experience but at the same time provided guidance and explanation as needed. He also played cool music while we were working on our project and we had fun conversations as well. Very nice experience!

Mike is a leathercraft master AND a wonderful instructor to the leathercraft newbie - This activity takes place in Mike’s workshop, in which other students (one-time and regulars) came and went while I was there. I thought the hum of activity and seeing what everyone else was working on really added to the experience. Mike’s own work is also on display, and it is masterful. Mike’s balance of instruction, demonstration, and just letting you do your thing was perfect. I chose to make one of Mike’s recommended projects for beginners, but I also watched him help another newbie create her own Pinterest-discovered project. I really enjoyed this activity and the purse I made while doing it. Highly recommend.

Crafts within everyone's reach - We went with the idea of spending some time as a family doing something different and it was wonderful. My whole family really enjoyed the process and the final result of the pieces. Michael explained each step very well and made us feel at home, and it is clear that he loves his profession and is an excellent leather craftsman. We recommend it 100%.

Incredible Experience - This was an incredible experience with a very knowledgeable leather-working master. Loved everything about it. I felt so accomplished and the teacher was so patient and kind and helpful. I cannot wait to come back to Madrid and do this again and make something new! One of the coolest things I’ve ever done.

Fun & Rewarding - My son, 17 and I booked this workshop because the football stadium tour was cancelled! We both found it really interesting and loved making our own bag and phone case with no previous experience. Michael is a great character and it was nice doing the workshop with another parent and teenager.
I would definitely recommend this - something different and rewarding.

Leatherworking Class - The host of the experience was fantastic; he was super flexible about adjusting the schedule when we had a conflict, and his class was very interesting. We both learned how to make leather bags, with techniques like the saddle stitch, cutting the leather patterns, riveting, and adding decorations. The bags turned out great and we hope to try more projects in the future with leather!
