  • Templo Romano de Evora (Templo de Diana) - Our tour will commence in the captivating historical centre of ‘c9vora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our meeting point will be the renowned Roman Temple of ‘c9vora, famously referred to as the Temple of Diana, at 9:00am. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to delve into the fascinating history of this remarkable structure and discover more about the captivating Roman era of ‘c9vora. We will then embark on the 1 hour and 15 minute drive to Torre de Palma.
  • Villa Lusitano-Romana de Torre de Palma / Estacao Romana de Monforte - While en route to the Roman villa of Torre de Palma, situated a little over an hour away, we will continue our discussion. At this site, you will learn more about the Roman villa culture of Portugal and have the opportunity to visit the charming museum, the well-preserved Roman structures, and, most notably, the exquisite collection of beautiful mosaics. You will have some free time to explore Torre de Palma at your own pace, and once everyone is ready, we will proceed to our next stop – lunch, around 45 minutes away.
  • Portagem - Although lunch is not included in the tour, we believe that one should have a beautiful setting to enjoy their meal. In turn, we will stop to eat at the River-Beach of Portagem, approximately 45 minutes away from Torre de Palma. Here, there are a few options for a light lunch (not provided) at a local cafe, or alternatively, you may choose to eat a lunch that you have packed, with plenty of spots to eat along the waterfront. If you desire, you can even go for a swim at the River Beach of Portagem.

At this stop we we will also visit the Roman Bridge of Portagem, located over the Sever River.

  • Cidade Romana de Ammaia - After enjoying a light lunch, we will reconvene and make our way to the nearby Roman city of Ammaia, a mere 5-minute journey. Here, we will guide you through the museum, as well as the extensive ruins scattered across the expansive site. Following the guided tour, you will have the freedom to explore at your leisure. Additional Information

Get ready for a journey departing from Évora, visiting noteworthy Roman sites of the area, including a holy place (the Roman Temple of Évora), a Roman residential, (Torre de Palma), and a Roman city (Ammaia).

The Romans arrived in Portugal during the Second Punic War, in the 3rd century BC. The settlement of present-day Alentejo led to the establishment of several civic centers: Beja, previously known as Pax Iulia, Évora as Ebora Liberalitas Iulia, and Ammaia as Civitas Ammaiensis. Apart from these civic centers, the Roman settlers and the local inhabitants resided in other locales, such as tiny countryside settlements or vast Roman villas.

Your tour leaders, who are skilled archaeologists, are excited to guide you through some magnificent locations from Portugal’s Roman era.
