Additional Information

Embark on a journey with us to uncover the magic of the ancient village and fortress of Marvão.

The 9th-century fortress in Marvão is believed to have been built by Ibn Marwan. This town together with the surrounding areas fell into the hands of the Christian soldiers devoted to Afonso I, the inaugural king of Portugal, three centuries afterwards. Marvão’s geographical position near the border of Spain and its strategically advantageous site made it significant.

On this tour, while the focus is on the middle ages, we will also delve into the area’s prehistoric beginnings, the Roman era and subsequent medieval times.

In present-day Marvão, visitors will get to explore the fort’s battlements, its dual interior courtyards, several towers, a well-maintained cistern, as well as captivating gardens and a medieval township.
