Highlights
  • Evoramonte - Our tour commences in the heart of Évora, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will gather at the Roman Temple of Évora (also known as the Temple of Diana) at 9:00am. From there, we will embark on a 30-minute car ride to reach the village of Evoramonte.

This remarkable village stands proudly atop one of the highest points in the Serra d’Ossa mountain range, offering breathtaking views and a unique photographic opportunity to capture the scenic beauty of the Alentejo region.

  • Castelo de Evoramonte - We will then proceed to visit the unique 16th century Castle of Evoramonte. Here you’ll delve deeper into the history of the village.

Once everyone is ready, we will proceed to our next stop – the Roman villa of Torre de Palma, around 45 minutes away.

  • Villa Lusitano-Romana de Torre de Palma / Estacao Romana de Monforte - While en route to the Roman villa of Torre de Palma, situated a little over an hour away, we will continue our discussion. At this site, you will learn more about the Roman villa culture of Portugal and have the opportunity to visit the charming museum, the well-preserved Roman structures, and, most notably, the exquisite collection of beautiful mosaics. You will have some free time to explore Torre de Palma at your own pace, and by 12:30 we will proceed to our next stop – lunch, around 30 minutes away.
  • Estremoz - Although lunch is not included in the tour, we believe that one should have a beautiful setting to enjoy their meal. In turn, we will stop to eat in the town of Estremoz, 30 minutes away from Torre de Palma. Here, there are a few options for a light lunch (not provided) at a local cafe or restaurant, or alternatively, you may choose to eat a lunch that you have packed.
  • Almendres Cromlech - We will leave Estremoz around 2:15pm and make the 1 hour and 15 minute drive to the Almendres Menir. This impressive solitary standing stone, approximately 4 meters in height, holds significance as a prehistoric ritual site.

Next, we will proceed to the nearby Cromlech of Almendres, situated just a few minutes away by van. Often referred to as the Stonehenge of Portugal, this extraordinary site features two concentric circles formed by standing stones. You will learn about the history of this spectacular site from archaeologists specializing in the prehistory of this region. You will also have some free time to explore the site.

  • Centro Interpretativo dos Almendres - As we leave Almendres, we will make a stop at the interpretive centre/gift shop. Our return journey to Évora will commence thereafter, with drop-offs scheduled for around 5:45-6:00pm.

A Great Tour! - This was our best day in Portugal. The tour was excellent. Bianca and Gonzales were so knowledgeable, not only explaining all the history and archaeology, but in chatting with them all day, we learned so much about Portuguese culture, economy and life. It was a lot of fun.
