- Hippodrome - The Hippodrome was a hub for sports and entertainment in ancient Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, and played a significant role in politics, as sports and politics were intertwined during that era. It’s no surprise that the Hippodrome was often the starting point for revolts and political movements throughout history.
Echoes of slaves’ cries as they raced chariots and the stirring words of intellectuals and poets that ignited public movements still linger for those with vivid imaginations.
-
Blue Mosque - The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, commonly known as the Blue Mosque, captivates with its exquisite Ottoman tiles that adorn the shrine’s walls. The floral patterns of the tiles and the well-lit, spacious interiors are testaments to the enduring spirit of the Ottoman Empire.
-
Hagia Sophia Mosque - The Shrine of Holy Wisdom, a stunning Byzantine basilica constructed in the 6th century, represents the golden age of Justinian.
The domed structure of the sanctuary was an architectural breakthrough and was so lavishly and artistically decorated that Justinian declared, “Solomon, I have outdone thee!” It would take humanity millennia to build a cathedral that could surpass the immense size of Hagia Sophia.
Converted into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of the city by the order of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror in 1453, the young Sultan fulfilled a divine prophecy by the Holy Prophet Mohammad himself. In 1935, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, converted the building into a museum by executive order.
Hagia Sophia, whose status was reverted to a mosque in July 2020, continues to take its visitors on a journey through its rich, multi-layered history as a mosque. -
Kapali Carsi - The largest, oldest, and most enchanting covered bazaar in the world, where people have been trading jewelry, carpets, food, perfumes, and even gossiping for centuries!
