Chefchaouen’s initiation began in 1415, with it being officially established in 1471 and concluded in 1480 by Sharif Ali ibn Rachid al-Alami, after his militant residency in the kingdom of Granada2. The city then housed a populace that consisted predominantly of Andalusians and Megorachim, in addition to Moriscos and was out of bounds for Christians under the threat of capital punishment. Charles de Foucauld, the explorer, was the only one to disregard this prohibition in 1883.
From 1471 up to 1561, the city was reigned by the Banou Rachid dynasty, the progeny of its originator who were theoretically the tributaries of the Wattassid sultans, before it was finally amalgamated with Morocco by the Saadians.
