Highlights
  • Secret Lagoon - Gamla Laugin - Originally built in 1891, the
    Gamla Laugin
as it eventually came to be known, was Iceland’s first swimming pool. For decades thereafter, Gamla Laugin was virtually abandoned until its present day owner decided to give it new life in 2005. By this time, the pool had long been forgotten and for a few years he used it as his own private heated swimming pool just for himself and a few friends, remaining a secret for several years. That is how The Secret Lagoon got its enigmatic name.

A natural hot spring feeds the lagoon with 38-39°C water that bubbles up from deep within the earth at a rate of 10 litres per second, constantly replenishing itself so that there is a steady supply of fresh clean water in the pool at any given time.

The Secret Lagoon offers brand new facilities next the hot spring area in Fludir. Facilities available: changing rooms, showers, resting rooms, bar and restaurant area. With the completion of changing rooms, showering facilities, outside deck, walkways and a small café, The Secret Lagoon quietly opened in the summer of 2014.

Additional Information

Located in the petite village of Fludir, amidst the Golden Circle area, you will find the Secret Lagoon natural hot springs. We’ve preserved its uniqueness and natural charm to offer our visitors an authentic Icelandic experience. A truly enchanting ambiance is created by the natural backdrop and steam evaporating into thin air. The water temperature consistently remains between 38-40 Celsius throughout the year. The entire vicinity is adorned with numerable geothermal spots and a quaint Geysir that graciously performs an eruption every 5 minutes for the amusement of our guests unwinding in the hot spring. During winters, the area often becomes a theatre to the spectacular Northern lights, and what could be a more mesmerizing way to relish this spectacle than soaking in the warm water amidst the earthly steam?

Quaint Lagoon - If you’re driving the Golden Circle this is a great stopping point for an enjoyable soak! The facilities are clean and they have lockers.

Alright - The secret lagoon is very good, the water is not too hot, 38/39°. The showers are single-sex and collective, it is recommended to take them naked, but few people do this. The place is not crowded with tourists. It was very good.

Very nice experience - Don't miss bathing in the sulphurous lagoon. It can be busy, but when we were there it became quiet after an hour. Book in advance, otherwise there's a good chance you won't be able to get in. Afterwards you will be relaxed and satisfied!

The Secret Lagoon is a great place to relax and enjoy the water any time of year! - We spent Christmas Day at the Secret Lagoon and it was amazing! They have a changing area with lockers which were free to use. Even though it was freezing outside, it’s only a few steps from the heated locker room to the lagoon itself. It was busy, but not over crowded. The staff was friendly and very helpful. After relaxing for a few hours in the lagoon, I enjoyed an Irish Coffee in the lounge. You won’t necessarily have all of the same luxuries that you may find at the Blue Lagoon, but the Secret Lagoon is absolutely worth the drive to experience.

An ancient, well-kept secret - With the Blue Lagoon closed due to the eruption of the volcano and the Sky Lagoon sold out at any time of the day, we opted for this solution along our route. The place, certainly more Spartan, but equally pleasant, is immersed in nature: the large pool, with a seabed made of pebbles of lava origin or smooth rock, is heated by the nearby small geyser, which every now and then erupts puffs of steam. The changing rooms are large, with lockers equipped with a key and do not have individual cabins. It is possible to rent towels. Before entering the outdoor pool it is mandatory to take a naked shower. The only flaw: hairdryers blow out cold air, so it's practically impossible to leave dry.

Great after a flight! - Good experience. Felt like a local pool- laid back, communal showers and changing. We took own towels and swimming shoes. Really lovely natural pool with a small geysir. Like a wonderful warm bath. Cafe with drinks and also beer etc.

there is no need to be afraid of the cold - a single "pool" which gets quite full after 11am, I recommend an opening ticket at 10am. very hot water, in some places even too hot. clean and stocked changing rooms (bags for wet swimsuits - hair dryer for swimsuits - shower gel - shampoo etc) hairdryer to dry my fixed hair: I managed not to get it wet, which was better

Good way to end a day in the Golden Circle - This was a nice way to end a day touring the Golden Circle. Unfortunately we started our entire trip with the Sky Lagoon. Secret doesn't come close to Sky. We all got very spoiled by Sky so didn't enjoy this experience as much. This is no frills.
