Additional Information

The streets and plazas of the city were once the stomping ground for noted figures like Dante, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Machiavelli, and are bursting with history. The city’s origins hark back to antiquity when Rome created a colony near the Arno bank. After the fall of Rome, the city endured chaotic political and military periods, only to thrive in the latter part of the middle ages. By the mid-1200s, the city began minting the golden florin, which became the foremost trade coin throughout Europe. The economic affluence led the prosperous Florentine bankers, traders and wool craftsmen to invest monumental amounts of money into public assets, construction and religious places, sparking the renaissance. The city hit its creative and intellectual peak during the emergence of the Medici clan. Following this zenith, the city experienced a slump, only to revive when it was named the capital of Italy, albeit briefly.

Take a stroll to phenomenal locations like Piazza Santa Croce and Piazza Della Signoria, a plaza so abundant with original sculpture, it could be mistaken for an open-air museum.
