Highlights
  • Flores - Your adventure begins when we pick you up from your hotel in Flores or meet at the “Yo Amo Peten” sign located at the island’s entrance near Doña Goya Restaurant. From there, we embark on a 90-minute drive to Ecolodge El Sombrero.
  • Topoxte Archaeological Site - A 20-minute boat ride from the lodge takes us to Topoxte island, a Post Classic site on the Yaxha Lagoon. The island measures 450 x 400 meters, with only the Principal Plaza excavated and restored. We spend about an hour exploring the island before continuing by boat to the north side of the lagoon to begin a jungle trek to the Maler Plaza of the Yaxha Archaeological Site.
  • Yaxha - The boat drops you off on the mainland on the north side of the lake, where you will start a 2-hour jungle trek to the west side of the Yaxha archaeological site. The narrow trail is sometimes obstructed by limbs and bushes, with the guide at the front using a machete to clear the path. You will pass several mounds and evidence of Maya occupation outside the central area of Yaxha. The hike is of medium difficulty, mainly due to the high humidity in the area. This incredible hike ends at the Maler Plaza of Yaxha, where you will stop for lunch.
  • Yaxha - Upon reaching the Maler Plaza, you will take a 30-40 minute break to enjoy a picnic lunch, rehydrate, and regain energy to continue exploring the Maya city. Your guide will lead you through the important plazas and give you the opportunity to climb several structures, concluding at the Temple of the Red Hands. You will visit structures such as the North Acropolis and the Great Pyramid from the Major Astronomic Observatory.
  • Flores - The walk from the Temple of the Red Hands to your vehicle at the parking lot takes only 15 minutes. The drive back to the island of Flores is approximately 90 minutes.
