Chiang Rai to Chiang Kong - Huay Xay
Chiang Khong - Chiang Khong is a tranquil district situated on the banks of the Mekong River, directly across from Huaixai in Lao PDR. Located about 115 kilometers from the provincial capital and roughly 55 kilometers east of Chiang Saen along Highway No. 1129, Chiang Khong is renowned for cultivating Pla Buk, the giant catfish. The Chiang Khong Fishery Station successfully inseminates and breeds Pla Buk, the world’s largest freshwater fish, and releases fingerlings into various rivers. The fishing season spans from mid-January to May. Visitors can enjoy sightseeing boat trips to admire the scenery and local lifestyles along the Mekong River. Another highlight is visiting Ban Hat Bai, a Thai Lu community famous for its exquisite local fabrics. Huay Xai - The capital of Bokeo province, Houayxay (Huay Xai) is located on the Mekong River, opposite Chiang Khong in Thailand. This charming town, surrounded by a vast natural landscape, often serves as a transit point to other destinations in Laos and Thailand. The area offers plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, and biking. Houayxay (Huay Xai)’s relaxed atmosphere is perfect for those looking to enjoy local Laotian cuisine and beer while taking in views of the Mekong River.
PakBeng, Lao
Pak Beng - Pakbeng is a town located at the midpoint of the renowned Mekong slow boat river journey. This river trip stretches between the UNESCO World Heritage City of Luang Prabang and the Laotian/Thai border town of Huay Xai. Nearly all travelers, about 99%, arrive in Pakbeng in the early evening and depart before 10 am the next day. The town is well-equipped to cater to this overnight tourism.
