KOKONOE “YUME” OTSURIHASHI opened on October 30th, 2006. It spans 390 meters in length, stands 173 meters high, and is 1.5 meters wide, making it the highest suspension bridge exclusively for pedestrians in Japan. Directly in front of this bridge, you can see ‘Shindo-no-taki’ or ‘Medaki’, which are among the ‘100 beautiful waterfalls in Japan’. Beyond the bridge, the vast forest of Narukogawa-Keikoku (the headwater of Chikugo River) unfolds, offering a captivating view in every season. Additionally, you can see the ‘Kuju-Renzan’ mountain ranges, including Mimata Mt. and Waita Mt., in the distance. This stunning 360-degree view truly makes it a “walkway in the sky”.

Yunotsubo Kaido Street runs through the heart of the popular hot spring town of Yufuin, stretching from Yufuin Station to Lake Kinrinko. It takes about 20 minutes to walk the distance without stopping, but the numerous interesting shops, cafes, and galleries make it worth spending an hour or two. The street is lined with low-rise, traditional buildings, and Mt. Yufu rises above, adding to the picturesque setting. It’s a delightful place to wander, sample local delicacies, and enjoy a walk around the lake, followed by a relaxing soak in one of the area’s many hot springs. *If you have opted for a paid tour guide, they will guide you. The “hells” (地獄, jigoku) of Beppu are seven spectacular hot springs meant for viewing rather than bathing, showcasing steaming ponds of various colors, bubbling mud pools, and other hydrothermal activities. The hells are presented in a somewhat touristy manner, which may not appeal to everyone. Five of the seven hells are located in the Kannawa district, with the remaining two in the more remote Shibaseki district.

Beppu Onsen on Oita’s east coast, is one of the most famous hot spring towns in Japan. It produces more hot spring water than any other place in the country, and the view of the townscape with plumes of rising steam is striking. Beppu is especially famous for its “hells,” (jigoku), hot springs that reach over 100 degrees Celsius. Although they are too hot to soak in, each has a different character.
