    In May of the first year of the Meiji era, in accordance with the wishes of Emperor Meiji, a memorial shrine named Gokoku Jinja was established by local former feudal lords and others to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives for the country during the Meiji Restoration and to console their spirits.
    Located along the approach near Ohori Park, there stands a grand torii gate measuring an impressive 13 meters in height, purportedly crafted from the finest Japanese timber.
