The inaugural leg of your excursion will lead you to the hallowed grounds of Wewurukannala Raja Maha Viharaya, situated a mere 1.5 km from Dikwella, en route to Beliatta. The highlight of this site is the monumental 160-foot Buddha effigy, the largest of its kind throughout Sri Lanka, with its origins tracing back to the late 1700s. A separate portion of the temple, known as the Tunnel of Hell, displays full-scale figures of malevolent spirits, malefactors, and the damned undergoing their gruesome punitive afterlife. Encircling the temple, a series of graphic narrations unfold the Buddha’s quest to enlightenment.
