Additional Information

The origins of Gelsenkirchen date back to 1150, though it remained a small hamlet until the surge of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, which sparked growth across the region. Gelsenkirchen was once known as the ‘city of a thousand fires’, a reference to the nighttime glow of burning mine gases. On this excursion, you’ll explore a significant Renaissance castle in the North West. Take in the sights of the Consol Theatre, a cultural venue set on the premises of an old coal mine. Witness the architectural genius of the Music Theater brought to life by Englishman Robert Adams, Germans Norbert Kricke and Paul Dierkes, Swiss Jean Tinguely, and Frenchman Yves Klein. You will also visit Halfmanshof, once a residential hub for the artistic community in 1931, which evolved into a focal point for renowned artists during the 60s and 70s.

Please note that all entrance fees to attractions are not included and are to be paid by the visitors on the spot as they are optional. None of the attractions included in this tour require paid entry.
