  • Kakheti Region - Kakheti, situated in the eastern part of Georgia, is renowned for its long-standing viticultural heritage, making it a pivotal region in the country’s wine production. This area, cradled by the Greater Caucasus mountains to the north and bordered by the Alazani and Iori Valleys, offers a unique microclimate ideal for grape cultivation. The rich, fertile soil and the varying altitudes create an exceptional environment for a diversity of grape varieties.

The history of wine in Kakheti is deeply rooted, tracing back thousands of years, evidenced by ancient wine cellars and traditional winemaking methods still in use today. The region is famous for its traditional “qvevri” winemaking process, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, where wine is fermented and stored in large earthenware vessels buried underground, imparting a distinct character to the wine.

  • Bodbe Monastery of St. Nino - Bodbe Monastery is one of the most important religious sites in Georgia. Today, there is a nunnery where the monastery used to be and the St. George Cathedral, part of the monastery, holds the remains of St. Nino, Equal to the Apostles, who brought Christianity to Georgia

Georgia wine tasting - Good value tour with very knowledgeable tour guide, Madi. Whilst the weather was indifferent and the journey not as scenic as it might have been, Madi explained the history of wine making in Georgia and the difference between factory produced and organic home produced wines. At the factory the wine tasting was generous and topped off with a good brandy sample. Unfortunately the weather turned worse and prevented any views of the mountains and valley but the visit to the monastery and private winery were worthwhile. Overall good value and very interesting.
