Additional Information

Are you curious about what whaling was like in the Cantabrian Sea? Or the life of Asturian fishermen and sardine workers? Join us on a journey through the cultural history of the port of Xixón and the fishing district of Cimavilla.

Our tour begins at Casa Paquet and proceeds to the former seafarers’ guild headquarters, which established Xixón as a significant whaling port.

We’ll explore inshore fishing and the canning industry near the old rula (fish market), and discuss the iconic sardine factories. Our walk continues through the streets of Cimavilla, recalling figures like La Tarabica, Telvina, and Rambal, and delving into their life stories.

The tour includes entry to the Birthplace of Jovellanos, showcasing works related to the sea and the people who shaped Barriu Altu’s character.

Highly recommended - We did the Xixón en Guerra route and we loved it. Perfect to learn more about part of the history of Gijón and rediscover already known places. Without a doubt we will do the rest of the routes as soon as we can and we recommend everyone who does not know them to discover them. Congratulations.
