- Pyramids of Giza - Our tour guide will pick you up from your hotel to begin your day exploring the pyramids. Among Egypt’s top tourist destinations, the Pyramids of Giza stand out as the most iconic. These three main pyramids were constructed during the 4th Dynasty (around 2550 B.C.) as tombs for royalty, a practice that was exclusive to the Old and Middle Kingdoms.
Today, Egypt boasts over 93 pyramids, with the most renowned located at Giza.
Let’s embark on a tour around the pyramid site to appreciate the grandeur of the area:
- Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the largest, tallest, and most well-preserved pyramid in Egypt. It was one of the “Seven Wonders of the Ancient World” and remains the only one still standing. For 4300 years, it held the title of the tallest structure on earth until the Eiffel Tower was built in 1889.
Constructed entirely of limestone, Khufu’s Pyramid is an architectural marvel, comprising approximately 1,300,000 blocks weighing between 2.5 to 15 tons each. Its base spans 13 acres, with each side measuring about 230m (755ft). The pyramid’s four sides align precisely with the cardinal points and have an angle of 52 degrees.
-
Pyramid of Khafre - The Pyramid of Khafre, or the 2nd Pyramid, is easily identified by the remnants of its original casing stones near the top. Positioned on a higher part of the plateau, it appears taller than the Great Pyramid, though it stands at 136m (446ft) with sides measuring 214.5m (704ft), covering an area of 11 acres with a 53-degree angle. Originally 143.5m (471ft) tall, it has lost some height over time.
-
Pyramid of Menkaure - Built by Khafre’s son, Menkaure, this is the smallest of the three main pyramids on the Giza Plateau. Initially 65.5m (215ft) tall, it now stands at 62m (203ft) with sides of 105m (344ft) and an angle of 51.3 degrees. It is believed that the pyramid was expanded during construction, resulting in a larger structure than initially planned. The original pyramid featured a simple descending corridor and burial chamber, but later additions included a new corridor with three portcullises, a small paneled chamber, another burial chamber, and a storeroom. Like its neighbors, it has a north-facing entrance.
-
Great Sphinx - Known to the ancients as “Shesep Ankh” or “the living image,” the Great Sphinx is one of history’s most recognizable monuments. Carved from soft sandstone, it might have eroded away if not for being buried in sand for extended periods. The Sphinx measures 60m (200ft) in length and 20m (65ft) in height, with a face 4m (13ft) wide and eyes 2m (6ft) high. Facing the rising sun, it was so revered by the ancients that they built a temple in front of it.
-
Giza - After the pyramid tour, enjoy a one-hour quad bike ride followed by a shopping tour in Giza to learn about papyrus making, essence perfume, lotus flowers, and cotton products.
-
Nile River - Conclude your day with a dinner cruise on the Nile, featuring a belly dancer, open buffet, tanoura show, and a sail on the river, before safely returning to your hotel.
