Highlights
  • Giza - Khufu’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, now buried beneath the village of Nazlet el-Samman; diabase paving and nummulitic limestone walls have been discovered, but the site remains unexcavated.
  • Giza - Menkaure’s pyramid complex features a valley temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple once housed several statues of Menkaure. During the 5th Dynasty, a smaller ante-temple was added to the valley temple. The mortuary temple also revealed several statues of Menkaure.
  • Giza - At the Giza Pyramids, you can visit the Great Pyramids of Giza - Cheops, Chephren, and Mykerinos, then explore the Valley Temple where priests mummified the body of King Chephren, the owner of the second pyramid at the Giza Plateau. This is also where you can get a close-up view of the Sphinx, the legendary guardian with a lion’s body and the head of King Chephren, standing by the vast funeral complex.
  • Giza - The Sphinx dates back to the reign of King Khafre. During the New Kingdom, Amenhotep II dedicated a new temple to Hauron-Haremakhet, which was later expanded by subsequent rulers.
  • Pyramids of Giza - Khafre’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple yielded several statues of Khafre, with many found in a well in the temple floor by Mariette in 1860.
  • Giza - Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt, is home to the colossal statue of Ramses II and the great Alabaster Sphinx. This city dates back to 3100 B.C.
  • Giza - The Pyramids of Sakkara are located just 27 km southwest of Cairo. Visit the Step Pyramid, built for King Zoser, which is considered a significant part of the evolution of pyramid construction, transitioning from the simple mastaba to its well-known form.
