Highlights
  • Castello del Molo (Koules) - Our first destination is Rocca a Mare, a Venetian Castle by the seaside and the Venetian Harbor. Koules (which means fortress in Turkish) is a massive two-story fortress that surrounds the harbor and it is one of the most emblematic landmarks of Heraklion Town.
  • Historical Museum of Crete - The neoclassical listed building that forms the oldest wing of the Historical Museum of Crete was originally the mansion of Andreas Lysimachos Kalokerinos, constructed in 1903 to plans by architect Konstantinos Tsantirakis. The murals with scenes from the Iliad and Odyssey are by Antonios Stefanopoulos, “decorator of the Quellenec House in Athens”.
In the 1970s the Museum was expanded via a new wing funded by the A. & M. Kalokerinos Foundation, in an undertaking that combined modern and neoclassical architecture. The wing was supplemented in the early 1990s with the addition of a further floor, and completed in May 2004 when the Temporary Exhibition Rooms and Yannis Pertselakis Amphitheatre were set up, with funding from the A. &. M. Kalokerinos Foundation and the Crete Regional Operational Programme.
  • The Natural History Museum of Crete - The Natural History Museum of Crete of the University of Crete was founded and has been operating since 1980, within the School of Sciences and Engineering of the University of Crete by Presidential Decree.
  • Venetian Walls and Tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis - The walls of the city of Heraclion are from the Venetian period of Crete. Their construction started in 1462 and lasted more than a century. This is the best preserved fortification of the 15th-16th century in the world and the best preserved fortification in the Mediterranean.
On the southwestern corner of Heraklion’s old Venetian city walls, high up on the Martinengo Bastion, we will visit the tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis and pay our respects to the monumental Greek novelist whose books have been translated into several languages.
  • Morosini Fountain (Lion’s Fountain) - Our journey continues through the narrow streets of the old city, passing the Armenian Church and the Lakkos area, finally reaching the heart of Citta di Candia at Lions Square. Here, we will indulge in a traditional Greek experience enjoying Raki and appetizers, concluding our 3,000-year journey into the past.
