- Mombacho Volcano Natural Reserve - The Crater Trail provides a unique chance to explore the only cloud forest on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast. You’ll start your ascent of the volcano in a 4x4 truck, pausing to savor some delicious local coffee at a plantation en route. Near the summit, you’ll embark on a brief, 1.5-hour guided hike along the trail, traversing diverse landscapes. Along the way, you might spot howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, sloths, dart frogs, and the endemic Mombacho salamander. The dwarf forest features fumaroles, and you may encounter various flora and fauna native to the area. To the north, you can view the city of Granada, the Islets of Granada, the Asese Peninsula, the Apoyo Lagoon, and the Masaya Volcano National Park.

The ride uphill only is an adventure by itself, the incredible steepness of the volcano guarantees a spectacular 4x4 ride. You will see coffee plantations and later on the cloud forest. The views are spectacular from here.
When you arrive at the top at 1,200 mts the temperature will have dropped significantly and the humidity will be high. It’s always windy, so be sure to bring an extra sweater. At the top there is a tourist center which houses maps, photos, models, souvenirs, and more interesting material. There is also a cafeteria where you can get a small meal and drinks, use the bathroom.
The Mombacho volcano has four craters. All of the craters are covered with cloud forest and you can walk around one of the craters, or hike around several craters. Besides lots of different trees and plants that thrive because of the cloud forests humidity you can also observe howler and white face monkeys, as well as snakes, deer, reptiles, birds, and insects.
